I've noticed these small songbirds in my yard the last two weeks and finally today I was able to get a shot of one and make an identification online. Orange-crowned warblers aren't the most dazzling birds in their family. These grayish to olive-green birds vary in color geographically and have few bold markings. There's rarely any sign of an orange crown, which is usually only visible when the bird is excited and raises its head feathers. I've noticed they seldom visit the feeders and are usually foraging in shrubbery and low trees.
@ingrid01 Thank you so much, Ingrid! Have you noticed these warblers in the Houston area right now? I'm always thrilled to notice new visitors in my yard and then can't wait to check out the images on my computer so I can try to identify them online. I was never into birds like this until I started my 365 project. :-)
I'm pretty sure I have seen them here too Gayle. Unfortunately the birds don't like my garden, probably because of my two dogs.
And then I have daredevil squirrels who do acrobatics and empty my bird feeder...
At the moment in the park/Bayou I see a lot of cardinals and blue jays. I have hot been out there with my camera, because of the... dogs... Anyway, I do know exactly what you mean by getting into birds (and even insects) since starting this project ;-)
Always cool to identify a new bird. I never thought I was a bird watcher, but first it was a feeder received as a gift, then more feeders, then the camera and the interest in identifying them....and here I am!
A lovely photo. He looks veu similar to some ood the wrens we have here in Australia. I think he his an insect eater looking at his beak. Helping to keep the bugs at bay.
What a pretty little bird, and isn't it lovely that information and Id's are now quite simple online. I always love it when I manage to find the correct answer!
