It doesn't matter which side of the fence you get off on sometimes. What matters most is getting off. You cannot make progress without making decisions. ~ Jim Rohn
The dickcissel is a common migratory black-throated finch, which has similar markings to the state bird of Kansas, the meadowlark. But the meadowlark's mark is in the shape of a "V" on its throat, its song is different, and it likes to keep its distance.
Also defined as a bunting, Spiza americana, of the eastern and central U.S., having a brownish back streaked with black and a yellowish breast and in the male a black patch on the throat. ~ Since the black patch is visible, this must be a male. Even though his mouth is open, he didn't make a sound today.
I'd love to spot him! What a pretty bird with such interesting markings - I see a lot of the meadowlark but never this one. Nice shot, especially when I enlarged to look at his colors.
