Decided I needed an outdoor photo today so headed out to the whales....I always pass the "Fletcher Jones Ball" and always think I must take a photo of our icon for 365. Today it happened! It is visible from many angles around the town, and I've been waiting for a bright sunny day to use the angle looking out to sea. However couldn't resist theses clouds today. The ball was a water tower for the Fletcher Jones factory which made beautiful clothes here until the 70's (I'm sure some of you would have owned a famous tartan skirt or tweed pants that never wore out!) The building has now been sold (2nd time) and a heritage overlay says the ball must remain as an icon. The new owner has plans to restore it in October. PS-there were no whales in sight and I went home :)
I remember visiting Fletcher Jones in Warrnambool with Mum and Dad in 1961. They were full of praise for the gardens there. I thought it was all rather boring - as a 16 year old would. Nice shot Denise.
Yes, it was sad when it closed, I think there are only a few textile factories functioning in Australia now. My husband has the most beautiful jacket from Fletcher Jones, made with care and of excellent quality!! A great capture.
I'm sure many people passing by wonder what the tower is, but for the residents, it represents all that you have explained. I'm glad it will be preserved. It's the sort of thing that adds to a sense of place.
What an interesting history to this place. Even though of us not familiar with the area have learned something new today. Very nice shot to accompany the information.
@darthkitty Certainly is a bit sci-fi :) @gigiflower So pleased you have a suit still - they never wear out :) @dollycreek Glad you husband has an FJ jacket still. Yes, all textile factories have gone around here- sad to see. @lynnilou It was the clouds that got my attention :) @cejaanderson It is certainly a Warrnambool landmark and so pleasing it will be restored :) @milaniet I'm pleased you are enjoying some of our history. That is the beauty of 365 site- we get to see and read about great things world wide :) @ladymagpie Yes, quite angry! But the good thing was, it passe over us with little rain :) @pyrrhula Glad you liked the setting. Will try for whales again today :) @eyesmile Yes I will definitely take a photo on a clear blue day with the ocean in the background. Just have to wait for the weather to oblige!!
This is beautiful - especially the contrast of the clouds and the trees. Plus, it the cloud formation on the left looks like a face in profile whispering to the cloud face on the right. Do you see it?
Interesting story!!! Love your shot of this famous icon, and you're right about the clouds!!! They're beautiful and I can see what Mrs. Laloggie is saying about the face whispering!!!
@mrslaloggie Well done! I didn't notice the faces but can definitely see them now that you have pointed them out. Thanks :) @kathiecb LOVE your sense of humour! Yes, he only had one :) @lealady Thanks Leah. Glad you could see the faces too! So interesting :) @sansjuan Thanks Nita. Didn't think to look at it on black. Great idea :)
