On Wednesday we visited Tongala where we have wonderful memories of growing up. We spent time at the cemetery where our parents, grandparents and relatives are buried. Then we had a nostalgic walk around the town enjoying the many familiar sights that of course have changed a lot! The bottom, upsidedown photo shows the funny side of Tongala, known for it's upsidedown dunny! The middle photo depicts the damage of the 9 years of drought which ruined the once lush dairying industry.
I had to look up "dunny," I must admit. (For any fellow Americans who might wonder, it's an outhouse). Your collage gives me the impression that your home town is close-knit, hard-working, and has a wry sense of humor.
I also live in a town that has suffered through drought. It's a very difficult time and one that isn't necessary relieved by a time of rain. Sometimes the damage is too severe. It is a sense of humor and a spirit of resilience that brings people through such times, and it looks like Tongala has both.
@tellefella Yes John, we had lots of mixed emotions, but great to go "home." @karlow75 The upsidedown attractions are at a pub on the highway just before Tongala, but known as a part of the town features. @hermann The drought certainly ruined the area, but it looks like it is in recovery mode now, although will never be the same. @darthkitty Very emotive but we were pleased to do it :) @lynnilou Was great to go back home, but yes, don't think I could live there now - I love the beach too much :) @cejaanderson Didn't think to explain dunny! Very Aussie slang! The town had a special event weekend many years ago called "Hoorayrootonnyloo" Hope you can work that out!! it was when sewage was connected to the last house in the town :) @mbemis Yes the town has really turned around now and is looking good thanks to the many dedicated people still there. @janiskay The outside toilet :) @denisefuller Thanks Denise. @kathiecb Yes 9 years certainly destroyed the area. And luckily I didn't need to use the dunny :) @peterlgrave How right you are Peter! We had our own milk factory in my days there :) The water tower in the photo was part of the factory. @gigiflower Thanks Sam :) Do you know this area at all?
