This is another of our great Ocean Road sights which of course we had to take "The English" (as we called them!) to see. The 1969 photo is the only shot I have of it when it actually was a bridge! In January 1990 part of it collapsed stranding 2 tourists on the island piece - back in those days we could walk anywhere on and around the attractions. My youngest daughter, then 4 years old, was fascinated with the news so we had to go for a drive and see it the following day. The stranded couple were winched to safety!
Great shot and neat to see how it has changed, I was there in about 2002 heard the story about the Japanese couple that got stranded on there when it crumbled..!!
Great collage, history and of course captures. :) Thanks for sharing. Can't imagine getting stranded there, especially before mobile phones and internet!
@pusspup I actually think they were lucky - they could have been on the bit that fell :) @hermann I'm sure there was a bang - but I didn't hear it :) @darthkitty Yes - guess they had to rely on tourist on the main land spotting them :) @susiemc I'll head back down again soon to capture more highlights - there are so man of them :) @anazad511 Thanks. I was pleased to find it as I thought I had one somewhere :) @dide You'll have to post a photo of the place that looks similar :) @julzmaioro@gigiflower@flyrobin@deliad Thanks for lovely comments. I was pleased to find the other shots I had to show the comparisons :)
I went on a bus tour from Melbourne to here and the driver told us the story of the two people stranded. He said they were married but not to each other so it was a bit of a scandal, haha.
The colours are so beautiful against the pretty sea.
Absolutely fascinating story (I hadn't heard it before) and the collage is beautiful - what a spectacular spot - those colors are amazing. Particularly like that top shot and the wonderful color of the water.
What a great story and the collage is lovely!! Exciting to have been able to see the before and after. Must have been scary for those people stranded and even for those seeing the event.
I missed this yesterday which is a pity because it involves one of my favourite stories.
We were looking at London Bridge a few years ago and there was a tourist group there with a guide giving a bit of a spiel on the bridge. So I sidled up to the group to hear what he was saying and he was giving the story of the section collapsing and stranding two German tourists on the remaining section and they had to send I helicopter in to rescue them.
From the group there comes this question in one of those wonderful pommie accents "Did they know they were German before they rescued them?" I just about fell into the ocean laughing.
Great collage btw
