It was a wet miserable day, so what would be better than sitting by an open fire in a pub! This is what my friend Sue and I did - there's even raindrops on the lens. This pub was built in the 1860's and sits on the Hamilton Highway on it's own in Darlington - nothing else there! It has been closed for several years, but now renovated and offering great meals and a b&b as well. I don't know why it has this name, but that is what it always has been.
Great shot, very atmospheric. When I first saw this I thought you had come on holiday over to the UK. Apart from the beautiful weather, this looks so like the style of so many British pubs.I wouldn't have to travel very far to find a similar looking pub. I am wondering if it was built by someone who had emigrated to Australia and wanted his own little bit of England, out there.
@markp@gijsje Yes I would agree it was probably built by an Englishman seeing that they were the first white people to settle here! Hence the name too! it is just strange that it stands alone on the highway in very flat sheep farming country - however there were many, many pubs built out here and I guess it was a good stop over point for the horse and cart travelers :) There is a little creek here too!
@onewing Wow! Thanks Babs :) I googled the pub, but didn't find anything as exciting as this! Yes, Mt Elephant isn't far away. I now have lots of questions to ask the owners after reading your info when I take the brolly girls there!
Interesting name for the pub & it's a fabulous old building.
The following link says it was named after Mt Elephant. http://www.haunted.com.au/news/hsun12.html
