Beyond the waves

Today I saw my first southern right whale for the year! She has been spotted around, but no sightings in the past 5 days with all our wild weather. I happened to be in the right place at the right time! Now I just wish for a BIG zoom lens :)
how exciting!

My legs would go wobbly if I were to see one in person. I too miss a big zoom sometimes. Lovely shot of this magnificent mammal.

Wonderful! The one time I went whale watching in Alaska I couldn’t guess where the Orcas were coming up next!

I now have a 28-300, but I'd love a bigger zoom. The problem is that I don't think I'd be able to keep a bigger lens steady.

That is very exciting to witness. Hundreds come here to calve and rear their young from July-November. They are awesome to watch.

@merrelyn I have the 28 - 300 too, but two other local girls who are "constant whale watchers" were there with their 800 zooms and their photos were amazing! We'd definitely have to use a tripod if we ever get one! Oh well, I'll just keep dreaming :)
@sangwann We are so fortunate that these whales have adopted part of our coast as their nursery - but every year it is so different! last year we had 5 have their calves here, but this year there is only this elusive one who "wanders" around the coast :) Still very special!

What an exciting day - I can't imagine how you'd be able to set up a tripod and know where the whale would appear this year - interesting to read about the background of the whales and your coast. I'd still be grinning if I had seen one this close.

Well done, we are just getting the stragglers travelling north now and will have to wait for their return to Antarctica in a couple of months time.

Our Alaska guide told us 15,000 gallons of water per blow!
