Talking with its mouth full by girlie

Talking with its mouth full

I went out to look at the flooded river yesterday and found myself photographing this lovely Scaly-breasted Lorikeet at its lunch instead. As is characteristic of this bird, it shrieked, gabbled and muttered the whole time it was eating. Not at all fazed by my presence, it worked its way through just about every blossom on this pink-flowering gum while I stood in a muddy puddle right next to it. Scalies are very similar in appearance to the Rainbow Lorikeets with their red eyes and red beaks but their breast feathers are scalloped in green and yellow, giving the appearance of scales. I think it's a rather unattractive name for a lovely bird.
Robin this is absolutely striking

What a cool action shot. I don't think it is fair that you have so many beautiful things to capture in your country. but I am glad you share them

You just continue to shoot one favorite after another for me. I can't get over the colors and beauty that surround you. I hope the river stays right where it is. The tragedy in and around Brisbane is so heartbreaking.

Spectacular photo, Robin!! The colors are simply amazing! I'd have to go to a Botanical Garden/Aviary to see something like that around here. Hope you're not getting too close to the flooding to get swept away...BE CAREFUL!! I've been watching video of it on the news. So terribly devastating.

Another awesome shot with such fine detail and beautiful colors. I'm glad you're finding beauty amidst the destruction.

A breathtaking shot. The colors are just gorgeous. I agree, the bird's name does not do it's beauty justice.
I also wish for the safety of your fellow Australians.

What lovely colours! Be careful though that you don't get stranded into trouble with this flood which is now in NSW too.
January 12th, 2011
@miraries Thanks Miriam. Our river is going down so no chance of problems here for the time being. Don't worry; we'd never take chances.

Stunning photo. I look forward to seeing the amazing Oz birds. I hope everyone doesn't wash away before I get there. Take care.
January 12th, 2011
@omabluebird Thanks Susan. It's a shame that most of the summer-flowering plants will be finished by then, but we should be able to rustle up a few birds, especially galahs.

This is an absolutely fabulous shot!

How beautiful. I thought it was a Weber's at 1st. I had the pleasure of raising a couple of those, they were so sweet and funny.
January 13th, 2011
@turtle117 Thanks Neva. Don't know the bird you mention, although I tried googling. My birds, of course, are wild Australian birds.

Amazing color & detail in both the bird & the flower, nice pic!

I too am jealous of all the beautiful plants and creatures you have in Australia that we do not have in the US (especially where I live!) but thanks so much....BEAUTIFUL!

Magnificent photo and the colors are to die for....just beautiful! I hate to hear of all the flooding in Australia on the news especially after getting these daily glimpses of all the beauty over there through your pictures. I hope the situation improves very soon.

It looks like an Audubon painting. I love the way the bird is stretching for the food. Lovely shot.

Great shot, so much detail in the feathers and the flowers. I agree on the name, scaly makes it sound like something dry and ugly.

Such a nice job, and great contrast against the background
January 14th, 2011

January 15th, 2011
The vibrancy of this picture is amazing. It looks like you live in Eden. These birds just fly wild outside?
January 16th, 2011
@bpizzo Thanks, Barbara. Yes, they fly in flocks all around us, all the time. If you look through some of my other posts in my various albums you'll see other parrots and cockatoos that fly around wild here, too. We have a very rich birdlife. I have not posted anywhere near the variety of birds that we have.

Lovely. Thanks for all the extra info, I'm getting an education as well as admiring your beautiful photographs.
