Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, Seal Rocks, NSW by girlie

Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, Seal Rocks, NSW

photo 254
In 1875, this lighthouse was the first built on the New South Wales coast as part of an intended network of lights that would eventually stretch for the entire coastline. The lighthouse keepers' cottages, shown here on the right and left, are heritage-listed and are now rented out to holidaymakers. This spot is popular for whale watching and overlooks the unspoilt and spectacular Treachery Beach, a mecca for surfboard riders. The lantern casing in the lighthouse is the original fixture.

Those are nice old buildings, I'm glad they weren't torn down but given a new purpose. I wonder how the view is from the top... This looks like a perfect place for a holiday, I agree.

I agree with everything geertje says! What a great place to have a holiday!

This is a very familiar site to me . . . could have been taken here in Michigan. We have many such structures along the Great Lakes that are no longer in use but have been restored as museums. Love that pop of blue in the sky.

Wow look at the sky and how that path draws you up to it. Wonderful place to holiday.

Very interesting. Don't the clouds give it a spectacular look? I like the walkway leading up to the lighthouse. Lovely shot.

There is a lighthouse on Point Loma in San Diego, California, that looks so much like this, and is also a vista for watching gray whales migrate. You captured that path beautifully.

I love lighthouses. Always thought I'd like to spend a week, month, or year in one. The stark white buildings, blue sky, & clouds are beautiful.

Great shot! Those cottages are wonderful and I love how the handrail leeds your eye upward to the lighthouse. And there is so much texture in that sky.

Another photo for which the thumbnail is woefully inadequate. Boy, what a wonderful place this would be to spend a few nights. This image has wonderful depth.

Beautiful location. It does look as if the sky is looming large though.

@ellida Thanks, Graham. Yes, the heatwave came to an end on that day, fortunately. We've cooled down considerably now, at least for the time being.

These look just like I think Australia should look. Uh at least from the many movies I have watched. Very interesting shot.

@omabluebird Thanks Susan. Can't take you to this one in the limited time (although your Wingham host may be able to) but will take you to Smoky Cape lighthouse, a picture of which I posted at http://365project.org/girlie/365/2010-08-14. It's close to Little Bay where the kangaroos are.

Wow what a wonderful shot, I love how you have composed it! And I am making this one of the first places on my list "to visit" definitely want to stay in one of those cottages with the surfers beach nearby :-)

Interesting that they would rent out a "heritage listed" building. Beautiful location, beautiful sky!

@molizard No bar on renting out heritage-listed buildings here. It's mainly seen as a way of preserving them from being knocked down or renovated inappropriately. Also a great drawcard for those who want to pay to stay in original surroundings. You can actually see a holidaymaker sitting on the veranda of the one on the left here.

wonderful idea to let out these heritage listed houses for holidays. You've captured this greatly too - nice perspective leading the eye to the top - to the light house.

What great luck to get that little bit of blue sky in the photo. It brings it all together. So beautiful, wonderful history, and what a great staircase. It would be a great way to stay in shape!!

Wonderful historical scene....beautiful lighthouse and who wouldn't love to stay awhile in those cottages. Your fabulous pictures of Australia must be a boon for tourism...I know I dream of one day visiting because of the scenes you've shared here! :)
