After a somewhat emotional day, my sister and I rode out the the "Big Tree" at Goose Island State Park in Lamar, TX. This tree is fairly sacred ground for our family, I've got Uncles, cousins and siblings that have all grown up on Goose Island, swallowed more of that saltwater that we know, and spent many a summer being photographed at the "Big Tree". I hadn't been back to the tree in several years, so I really wanted to see it today. Some of my fondest childhood memories are from this one little spot of Texas with Granny and Papa Joe. What started out as a an emotional day really ended up being a wonderful sweet day. We had lunch with Papa (my 91 year old grandpa)- he continues to be so full of life even as he ages and will always be such a wonderful inspiration to us all. He is the most amazing human being I've ever known. We got some much needed photos of Papa with us, which we will no doubt cherish.
This is beautiful and a beautiful story. I love big oaks. I visited my favorite tree yesterday and notices a lot of the huge branches have broken off. :(
