On this day 1st July 1916, when the whistles blew 1000's upon 1000's went over the top. At the end of the day the British casualties alone was nearly 60,000. This was the start of the Battle of the Somme. When this one Battle drew to a close in the Autumn over 1 Million were either dead or injured from both sides. The Poppies grew on and near those fields and so I dedicate this image to those who were lost so that we may live.
