Yarrein Creek by golftragic

Yarrein Creek

Twenty years ago the water in the Yarrein Creek was fresh, and the creek ran for much of the year. During the long drought the creek became saline and has remained so as may be seen from the dead trees and lack of lush vegetation.
Great shot

Even though this area is in drought it still has such beauty about it. Fabulous shot and yet another photo which is so Australian.

Wonderful landscape shot. The shape of the trees make it dynamic and dramatic. I also like the soft colours.

Quite upsetting really - the loss of a whole ecosystem and makes you wonder how often this is happening in other areas too. You have captured the wonder of the place none-the-less, with lovely sky to boot.

still beautiful Marnie. Pity, about the lack of water, is it due to drought or dams build by man?

@newbank Thanks Ruth, this is an area of around 12" annual rainfall, very variable. Water is very precious.

@dide Definitely Dianne. The problem here seemed to stem from the deepening of one or more waterholes during the drought which seemed to open an underground source of saline water which promptly took over the previously fresh-water creek. That particular spot used to have quite lush vegetation (for the area) and lovely trees surrounding that waterhole. Salt is such a killer.

@ninaganci Drought Nina, and attempts to deepen waterholes to water stock.
