From Kolkata we caught a train four hours north to Farraka where we boarded the Rajmahal, the river boat which was home for the next week as we meandered down the Hoogley (Lower Ganges)
Never heard of this river boat cruise! It must have been wonderful - so different! It is so good seeing the map - puts it in place, not knowing this area at all!

@maggiemae Google APT or Travelmarvel (same company, different prices). The train trip was very interesting and not bad, all things considered. Farraka is an interesting place, there's a barrage across the Ganges (by whatever name) there so the flow can be split between the Hoogley (India) and the Brahmaputra (Bangladesh). Great to see nations can co-operate like that isn't it?

@maggiemae If you want a fabulous river cruise, check out Travelmarvel's Myanmar + Inle lake package. We did that in 2017 and it was fantastic.

Such an interesting itinerary - and your images have been so great.

I bet the train travel was a bit of a bone shaker.

It's great to see your trip marked out on a map. I'm looking forward to seeing your cruise shots :)

Great trip. Traveling by train through India is an adventure. I understand that you did not go on the roof.

It was an adventure for you- I look at this map and realize although these places existed when I was a child they had different names and technically I didn't know they existed! So much to learn!!

@dide It was interest indeed, in both the usual senses! Sometimes a tad too interesting. I'm very pleased you're still enjoying the endless images from there.

@onewing Nah, it wasn't too bad at all Babs. As you'd expect first-class there isn't what we'd expect here, but it was comfortable enough and perfectly OK for four hours. The ride was OK too, unlike the dreadfully rough train trip we suffered in Sri Lanka.

@merrelyn The preceding week or so goes Delhi, road to Agra, road to Jaipur, air to Kolkata. Then rail to Farraka, boat back to Kolkata for one night then home via Singapore.

@haskar Absolutely not Haskar. I was hoping we'd see one of those trains with people riding on the roof, but sadly no.

@olivetreeann The whole thing was definitely an adventure Ann, with good bits, not-so-good bits and a few bad bits. Wouldn't want to go back there though, unlike Myanmar where I'd love to repeat the trip we did in 2017.

Sorry re the bad bits but sure am enjoying your photos and the map is fun to get a sense of where you went
