Coober Pedy 3

No prizes for guessing Coober Pedy's raison d'étre. Images of the mined landscape tomorrow.

She's sure had a fair beating in these parts.

At first I thought of mining in terms of what goes (or went) on around here. Then I saw the opal sign!

@olivetreeann There is some open-cut mining some miles out of town, can't remember if it's coal or iron ore but the opal mining is something else again.

Coober Pedy is one of the few mines that have had regular coverage in documentaries in German TV. It must be an amazing place to visit.

great entrance :)

Surprizingly, we see this remote place quite regularly on the French TV as well, because of the opal mining and of the harsh living conditions up there.

It looks rather desolate

Sorry Marnie - I'm not going to look at these! Not that they won't be great - I'm sure they will. But we have tried several times to visit Cooby Pedy - and never actually made it - so it's on our list for our last "round Oz " trip next year ( if all goes well!) And I really want to see it with my own eyes! :)

@robz No problemo Rob. The rest of my posts from here will have been taken on our flight over Lake Eyre to see it filling with water. Quite a sight. That rare event is the main reason for our going on this whole trip.

@ludwigsdiana Goodness gracious me, how odd. The mines there are, as you'll see very small, but thousands of them.

@etienne Goodness me, how odd. I wouldn't have thought it was quite so interesting to people in Europe.

@onewing Definitely!!!

@golftragic Now that must have been a sight- well worth the speedy trip! :)

@robz Yep, sure was.

Under these conditions, this is a great way to survive. However, I prefer forests and rivers.

@haskar I don't mind dry, but this is too dry for me too.
