lemon splash

this is for my get-pushed - 270 challenge this week.
Peter Harris asked me to take something artistic in nature and use all manual settings.
That is an artistic shot alright.

Glenda, you've certainly risen to the challenge and this is a departure from your norm. Great stuff. It's in the nature of the Get-Pushed challenge that we offer each other constructive criticism. I know how difficult these shots are to pull off and you've done well to my eye. I would just wish for this end of the lemon to be absolutely in focus, whereas I think your plane of focus here is about 2cm further down the glass. A very minor thing is that the image is unevenly cropped. but that really is getting picky! I'm glad to read that you felt this was fun. Messy, as well, I expect! ;-)

@peadar thanks
I appreciate the help. I need an piece of advice you are willing to give.
I can recrop better. The focus was a challenge but I did ot manually.
I might reshoot this if I can find another lemon tosser.

@gq For these type of shots you have to use manual focussing, I think, as you have done. The only advice that I've seen and used is to position something easy to focus on where you want the plane of focus to be, then manually focus the lens to that point. Where the subject is dropping from bottom to top of the image that is usually sufficient (as, hopefully, the subject will always be around the same distance from the lens). However, it looks like you are dropping your subject from the camera position downwards, so you have to open the shutter exactly at the point the subject hits your plane of focus (which is always going to be a lottery, given the equipment we are using). I assume you are using a macro lens (the Canon 100mm macro?) in which case your depth of field is going to be shallow anyway, making the job harder! My pragmatic advice would be (a) try high speed continuous shooting (I think the 5D can do 6 frames per second) which means you have a good chance of at least one of the shots being in focus at the point you want it to be, (b) if you can get a remote shutter release this helps a lot and (c) as you say, enlist a willing helper to drop your lemons! I really hope this is some help, I'm always happy to answer specific questions - I don't pretend to be an expert so I'll always let you know if there's something beyond my experience.

@gq In the third sentence I meant "dropping from the top to the bottom of the image" of course, not the other way around!!!
