Under the Mountain by graemestevens

Under the Mountain

Taranaki is arguably New Zealand's largest oil and gas producing province, so coupled with the vastness of New Zealand's dairy farming capabilities you could say that we have a lot of...well, gas.
This is Kapuni which, most of the time, is a bit of an eyesore but on some days it can pretend to be almost picturesque. Interestingly enough, Kapuni translates as "natural gas", while Kapu is "in the palm of the hand"...so I have a handful of gas...
One other piece of useless information about the Kapuni Production Station is that security patrols tend to frown upon people taking photographs...which makes me wonder what else they could be doing in there, but I can tell you now that if they're planning on launching an all out attempt at world domination they'll have some pretty stiff competition from my base in the garden shed, what what!
So, if you've got this far, why not have a wee gander on black...
Amazing capture. Fav

@losthorizon Thank you so much, appreciated as always
June 30th, 2015
Love how the smoke blends into the clouds and highlights the mountain. Refineries have a certain stark beauty to them at times.
June 30th, 2015
@texastrails Thanks very much - and yes, they do indeed, weather dependent I think but I do agree :)
June 30th, 2015
Great job in the edit and picture
June 30th, 2015
Surreal! Fascinating juxtaposition of technology and nature!
June 30th, 2015
@juliedduncan Thanks very much :)
@auphoff Thank you very much :)
June 30th, 2015
Unless they are doing something illegal what would they frown on someone taking pictures? Seems a little ridiculous. Now I could see them getting upset if someone were setting off fireworks.
June 30th, 2015
It looks like the mountain has emerged from the smoke. Almost surreal.
June 30th, 2015
I did have a gander on black... I love how the smoke obscures the base of the mountain, so that the top peeps out above. Your edit is terrific at bringing out the details of the smoke. This is really a beautiful mountain. As a bonus, you are planning on world domination from your shed and I believe that you are likely to be successful. Please remember me with mercy when you are crushing subjects under your heel, like bugs.
June 30th, 2015
i like the optical illusion created here... somehow the mountain tops look like they don't quite belong! please let me know if you require any assistance with the world domination thing...
June 30th, 2015
@janiskay I didn't waste time asking them why I shouldn't take photos...but it was the filthy looks and the fact that I've tried before and been turned away...
@aecasey We've been surrounded by low cloud for most of the day...seems to work for this...
@rosiekerr Mercy! I shall show none! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh, and thanks very much, much appreciated ;)
@northy I'm still working on a business case for my financial department but I'll be sure to let you know!
June 30th, 2015
i have no interest in business cases... happy to take it on faith ;p
June 30th, 2015
Fabulous...
June 30th, 2015
@northy I have no interest in writing a business case, so I think I'm good to go.
@tonygig Thank you most kindly ;)
June 30th, 2015
Oddly evocative. A great image!
June 30th, 2015
@aikiuser Thanks very much :)
June 30th, 2015
That effect is so cool.. like the mountain's rising from the factory chimney smoke... Fav.
June 30th, 2015
Nice in b&w.
June 30th, 2015
@bankmann Thank you so much, appreciated :)
@dide Thanks very much :)
June 30th, 2015
Great shot.. love how the smoke is going around the mountain..
June 30th, 2015
@julzmaioro Thank you very much :)
June 30th, 2015
This is great, like mountain would be forming out of smoke
June 30th, 2015
@susale Thank you very much :)
June 30th, 2015
great shot-i had to look twice at the mountain-it looks like it has no bum at first glance
June 30th, 2015
Wonderful ugliness
June 30th, 2015
@tracie8266 It has a very large bum, much like myself, but today it's been hidden by the cloud, unlike mine
@mastermek Thank you kindly :)
June 30th, 2015
Rather superb with that mountain emerging from the steam/smoke. Top shot!
June 30th, 2015
Sam
oooohhhhh I do like this one ALOT! FAV. BTW, with your new job, do you do any work?
June 30th, 2015
Cool shot. I have worked in places like this and they don't want people taking pictures. But I think technology is kicking their ass. #1 every body has a camera on the phone. #2 With an ok camera and 70-300 lens. I can get a photo of the water tower in town and read the name of the town on the water tower with a photo of it. The town is 5 miles away as a crow flies. I am sure if bad guys wanted a photo of their Ref. they would have a better camera than most people have, So I think the real reason for not wanting photos taken is because, Not everything they to is up to code and don't want someone getting a picture of it. So keep the garden shed doors shut so people can't peek in. Planning on launching an all out attempt at world domination you got to be sneaky.

Graeme Graeme Graeme
that is all
@gigiflower obviously he works because he makes me mistakes and is not as rude as he should be - bloody shocking! !!!
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied @graemestevens Mmm, Ms Annie, what language are you speaking? And as for Mr Stevens working............well he seems to still have a lot of time on his hands to take photos! Just wondering! Mr Stevens doesn't really talk to me anymore - I must have done something to upset him. Oh well, his loss!
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower he talks to noone Miss Sam and that is my point - hesis busy in his new job - photos taken on a single outing
English - the me was a typo silly
I am willing to allow him a little more time to settle in - not much more though lol
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied He was super rude to me so I gave up on him!
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower oh Miss Sam - when did that happen? I will kick his butt
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied A couple of weeks back..........no idea what I did! I carry on.....
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower well Miss Sam did I miss it!
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied You must have........now he hardly speaks to me! It's a shame but what do you do???? I lay low now after copping his wrath one too many times!
June 30th, 2015
very interesting juxtaposition there
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower oh Sam I cannot believe it - I think you must be making fun of me
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied Nooooooooooo you can see for yourself - no more discussion between him and I! I'm too scared :(
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower was it Fabio? I have noticed less discussion
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied OMG YES!!!!!!! I remember now. It was the Fabio discussion between the 3 of us.........he was NOT happy Jan! Do you remember?
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower there is a problem......both of us it seems
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied Oh well. What is one to do?
June 30th, 2015
@gigiflower i know not
June 30th, 2015
Sam
@annied I can't do the wrath thing on such a fun site! So I don't engage. Too scared!!!
June 30th, 2015
Disturbing juxtaposition - but then it's you, so what else would it be?! :))
June 30th, 2015
This has such a @seanoneill feel to it. Love the b&w and horrors at what's being spilled into the environment!
June 30th, 2015
@taffy I guess it does, thanks for pointing me in that direction :)
@mothermalarky There is that and it is me ;)
@pinkpaintpot Thanks very much - it's a bit like that but it looked half way decent today instead of just down right ugly.
@wildernesswillie Thanks very much...and yes, I tend to agree on the reasons for not wanting those shots taken!
@888rachel Thanks you very much indeed :)
@gigiflower Yes, I do work an awful lot. This was taken on my way to a meeting in the back blocks, I figured I could get away with stopping for 5 minutes...Oh, and thanks very much :)
@annied Fair enough.
June 30th, 2015
Love this!
June 30th, 2015
@ukandie1 Thank you very much
June 30th, 2015
Kim
@gigiflower @annied it was me that was not happy. That was about the third or forth time I'd asked him to deal with inappropriate comments and he didn't know how to so he went silent. Happy wife = happy life
June 30th, 2015
Fantastic landscape. I'm sure their plan for world domination is not nearly as advanced as yours.
June 30th, 2015
Back on dry land and you are upsetting some bored beefy security operative.. Its really quite stunning I thought it was a double exp first..fav
June 30th, 2015
Wow, haven't read all above, but assume it's already said, it looks like the mountain is floating on the gas! Fav.
June 30th, 2015
How magical to have the cloud mixing up with the mountain, I almost missed it. I like your new profile shot.
June 30th, 2015
@karlow75 Thanks very much indeed, I even have blue prints for my plan...and some wiring...
@jack4john Thank you very much - I wouldn't dare double expose around that place!
@overalvandaan Thank you very much, always appreciated.
@yaorenliu Thanks very much, on both counts
July 1st, 2015
That is so wickedly cool, I cant tell if it's the fog or smoke that the Mt is hiding behind.. Big fav
July 1st, 2015
@etchasketch1 Thank you very much - It's a bit of both, probably means it will rain later!
July 1st, 2015
Fantastic. Fav.
July 1st, 2015
Like it.. but what's that pointy thing emerging out of there fug?
July 1st, 2015
@nickspicsnz thanks very much :)
@yrhenwr I forgot to clone that bit, damn.
July 1st, 2015
Fabulous shot! Love how the mountain peak emerges out of the smog! I almost wish you had cropped it tighter to that and eliminated some of the foreground. FAV in any case!!
July 2nd, 2015
@panthora Thanks very much - I did think along those lines as well but had already posted it and couldn't be bothered...
July 2nd, 2015
Lee
It's definitely "6 of one half a dozen of the other", shame about the pollution, but it's made a great shot. Fav.
July 2nd, 2015
@gamelee thanks very much

@taffy Now now Taffy, you will make me blush! I'm back for a while.....
July 27th, 2015
