Onaero by graemestevens

Onaero

This is the old Onaero Bridge, about 20 minutes north of New Plymouth. I can remember when this single lane bridge formed part of the main road in to the province but then they widened the road and put in a new, safer bridge. Now we get all sorts of outsiders visiting. Bah! Mind you, all sorts are leaving as well, so it all balances out in the end.
Incidentally, the sign lying down on the left of the shot reads "To Onaero river. Use path under bridge - do not cross highway". Fascinating.
looks like an interesting place to explore

It has a haunting, ancient quality to it. Fav! Love the lighting and the overgrown, crumbling condition, as well as the pov.

Great low perspective.

Great shot! Nature is certainly reclaiming the area.
Now be honest...you crossed the highway, didn't you?
March 24th, 2016
The bridge looks strong and inviting but I guess you have climbed over the barriers?
March 24th, 2016
Don't know what is more creepy here, the photographic atmosphere or the need for that sign. Lovely, moody shot.

love the textures of this one...thanks for telling what the sign said...can i ask a (probably really dumb) question...do you shoot in black and white? or do you convert...and if you shoot in b/w..is the only way to view the scene in b/w through live view?...but you wouldn't shoot in live view would you?...with my 60D it takes forever to focus and the shutter speed slows too...just wondering...i know my petticoat of ignorance is showing but if i don't ask i won't know...ta... :o)

Ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggetty beasties and things that go bump in the night?
March 24th, 2016
@golftragic Ooooh, I hope so, I really do...
@maree_sanderson I don't shoot in live view for that very reason. I do always shoot in B&W though, but always in RAW as well so when I download to Lightroom it converts to colour anyway. Don't ask me why I then choose to shoot in B&W when I have to turn around and re-convert it to B&W...but the real reason that I shoot in B&W (and I don't know that this will make a lot of sense) is that I tend to "see" in B&W as well - don;t worry, I can actually see colour, but I can "see" the shot I want better in B&W. Having said that, there's odd occasion where I throw caution tot he wind and go with colour. Ack. I hope that makes more sense than I think it did...
@noko411 Thanks very much - I think it's a combination of both...
@maggiemae This is Taranaki...there are no barriers
@dyanstevens Thanks very much...and I can neither confirm nor deny...
@taffy Thank you very much - on my knees again!
@jetr Thank you very much - unless of course you mean that I have an ancient, haunting quality about me, in which case...what the hell, thanks for that as well ;)
@joemuli Every now and then I masquerade as normal...
@annied There's nothing wrong with the occasional exploratory...
March 24th, 2016
Love this! So much history in the bridge and a great grungy b&w.
March 24th, 2016
@dibzgreasley Thank you very much :)
March 24th, 2016
Ah, so that is how some of you got out...
March 24th, 2016
@alinz It's certainly how I got in...
March 24th, 2016

A very effective B&W image, nice pov :)
March 24th, 2016
OOh....nice...like a bit of dereliction me......
March 24th, 2016
I like the low PoV, it accentuates the dereliction - Urbex in the countryside... I like it!

Lee
Nature taking back control. Good shot.
March 24th, 2016

March 24th, 2016
Looks very intriguing place, I´d like to see more....
March 24th, 2016
@susale Sadly, there is no more. The only other thing at Onaero is the river.
@nicoleterheide Thank you very much :)
@gamelee Thanks very much :)
@vignouse Thank you sir, I spend a lot of time on my knees...

March 24th, 2016
You know the coolest haunts....
March 24th, 2016
Nice POV
March 24th, 2016
Only deterioration left, so now you can explore without any pesky traffic.
March 24th, 2016
@joysabin I only wore clean underwear because of the risk of traffic...accidents and all that...
@rachelwithey Thank you very much :)
@jack4john Which is why I get so many strange looks...
@juleshoogstraanderson I don't know what came over me...
@kategoring Thanks very much :)
@elytra Thanks very much - I can sell you a ticket if you like... ;)
March 25th, 2016
Like the low pov!
March 25th, 2016
Cool and gritty. Captures the decay and the emotional impact of the location. And, being in B&W is just perfect! :)
March 25th, 2016
@ukandie1 Thanks very much - I'm not short, I just spend a lot of time on my knees
@thomastoth Thank you very much indeed :)
March 25th, 2016
Fantastic bridge, love how beat up it looks - enhanced by great processing no doubt :)
March 26th, 2016

April 16th, 2016
@bankmann Be very careful...there's a campsite on the other side...
