not my normal thing by graemestevens

not my normal thing

I took this with a 1953 Kershaw King Penguin Eight-20 (some of you may recall that the lovely Mrs. S gave it to me for my birthday a few months ago). The difficulty is that although our one local photography shop sells the film and develops the negatives they do no have the correct carrier in their scanner to be able to provide prints (I would have to send the negatives away to get these).
Having done a small amount of research I ended up placing the negatives on a lightbox, photographing them, importing them to Lightroom and inverting them...which also meant that any processing (minimal as it was) had to be done "backwards" due to the inverting...what was dark in LR would be light and vice versa.
No wonder I smoke and drink.
I managed to salvage 4 shots from the first roll of film, or at least get 4 images that I am "happy" to share. I may bore you with these over the coming few days as I have a house to paint and not a lot of time on my hands.
They're not the most inspired of shots but it is what it is and I do rather like the "old school" feel of them.
very nice, its good to get out of the old comfort zone, you can also use the tag film-lives for your film shots, look forward to seeing more if you can muster it. i am developing and scanning at home this year, if you want to collect up a bunch and send me the negs i could scan them for you... is this 120mm or 35mm film?

Cool tree!! Nice composition.

@kali66 it's 120 film - I've almost got the lightbox thing sorted so we'll see how we go. Aliexpress.com also has a number of negative scanners available but I haven't been able to find one for 120 film yet. I've just picked up some colour film as well so i'll have a crack with that over the next few weeks time permitting - I may take you up on that offer!!!
@kwind Thank you very much :)

Turned out great!

This is awesome - love it.

@linnypinny Thank you very much :)
@lsquared Thank you - a bit of work to do on the lightbox yet...but apparently I have to finish painting the house first...
@kali66 Quite hard to find...if you manage to find one let me know where/how/who and I'll do the same if I get there first!

I'll be interested to see more from this camera....such an interesting challenge.

Nice murky vintage feel to this... what a cool toy to play with!

@northy Thanks very much - it's certainly a bit more challenging to use. I can't delete anything!
@hrs Thank you very much - you may well get your wish over the next few days.
@jgpittenger Thank you very much :)
@isali Thank you very much :)

Great story, love the shot.

I love film
January 4th, 2017
I think I like this process. Might be fun to do a 1920s studio shot like this.
January 4th, 2017
Phew good for you, that's a lot of work but I do like the results... and this is a wonderfully tangle-y tree.
January 4th, 2017
It's quite ethereal. I would quite like to give film a go but I haven't been able to find a decent source for film and then one has the problem of development. The closest place I have found is around 120km from me!

Great shot! Love it!
January 4th, 2017
@salza Good lord...that's a long way...
@kerosene I do like a knotted branch or two ;)
@ahleena That would be fun - the film and camera I'm using tends to have a very old school look and feel
@deadschool It's been years since I last used it and certainly never in a camera this old!
@golftragic Thank you on both counts.

@harbie Thank you very much :)

I love film too :)

Gorgeous, eerie but gorgeous ! I miss playing with film its been so long

Totally 1930's England. Lovely tangled tree.

@scotthouston Thank you kindly - wait until you see the next few, then you'll really think I'm living in another era
@silverhorn Thank you very much - it's been a few years (I'm not saying how many) for me as well, but never with a camera that's 20 years older than me!
@ingrid2101 It's going tot make some improvement I think before I'm "happy" with the results, but it's all about having fun
@gigiflower I guess it has to have some redeeming quality ;)

Interesting experiment.
The thing about this sort of old film shot is they leave me unsettled. I guess I associate them with true crime books.
January 4th, 2017
@humphreyhippo There is a certain "look" to them - the next two are slighter spookier...which is probably why I'm saving them...big finish and all that ;)
January 4th, 2017
Firstly....I really like this
Secondly...you can buy a little scanner machine that scans negatives to computer....I am lying on the lounge atm and can't be bothered looking for mine to get brand..
Thirdly...is thirdly where I'm at?..the writing has scrolled....how often do you paint the bloody house it seems it is often an excuse 😉
January 5th, 2017
Oh...I see you've addressed the scanner thing...I was too lazy to read your reply to Kali 😨
January 5th, 2017
Looks somewhat disconcerting, especially in B&W - nice capture!
January 5th, 2017
@annied I never finished painting the house last summer...only got about 2/3 of the way around
@brett101 Thank you very much :)
