This is the exoskeleton of a cicada like l recently posted. If you look closely into the split down his back you can see where his legs connected to his body on the inside. When they molt they attach themselves to a surface and slowly crawl out of their skeleton. I missed this one but have watched before and it usually takes around 30 minutes or more for the whole process
Thanks for the explanation. That must be interesting to watch.

I see these skeletons everywhere this time of year. We’ve had more cicadas this year than ever, they make quite a racket!

@shutterbug49 If you aren't grossed out by bugs it is very interesting Debbie!
@louannwarren They are noisy but they always signify summer to me
@tunia The skeletons?! What did you do with them?!
@dutchothotmailcom I appreciate that Esther thank you!
@taffy thanks so much Taffy!
@ludwigsdiana thank you Diana! We don't get red bishops here! ;~} I grew up in Washington state and there were no cicadas or cockroaches there either. It is interesting to see the types of bugs that only appear in certain places.
@pamknowler Thank you Pam for the view. I think they grow everywhere but many of them only appear every 13 to 17 years. We get the kind called periodical that show up every year.
@pej2 Thanks Paul. Actually this is the periodical cicada that returns every year
@olivetreeann as long as you aren;t squeamish it is very interesting
@serendypyty Thank you Cazzi it is fascinating
@randystreat thank you Kathy. I have only seen it once or twice in the 30 years I have lived here myself
@marilyn LOL! thank bunches!

Like @tunia we used to collect these as a kid. I guess I'm still a kid, because I'm sure I have one or two in boxes or jars along with other bits and pieces of nature.
