Monarch on Thistle

I could not believe my luck today! My son-in-law cooked for my daughter and myself for Mother's Day, had a lovely time. On the way home, I stopped to take photos of Indian Blanket wildflowers, there were several types of butterflies there and I snapped away. Farther down the country road, I stopped to take photos of the thistles. I almost did not notice this Monarch! I was so excited! It is the first one I have seen in a long time and the first one I have gotten a photo of!

@tooki Thank you! He's been my son in law for a bit over 17 years, so I guess we will keep him - LOL. He did the barbeque and my daughter did the veggies and granddaughter helped with desert.

@kerristephens Thank you!
@darsphotos Dumb luck and patience, I think. This was a fun shot, I was panning the thistles through a steel or iron fence, leaning over and could not believe it when I saw him. It is a wonder I did not fall over the railing leaning in to get a good shot! Would have been awful, as I was alone on the country road. Taken near Springtown, Texas.

@grannysue Do you have a setting for Macro on your camera as my Sony does not have a dedicated Macro setting and so I play with a few settings and most of the time cannot capture anything like this. Do you have a setting that you use for photos like this and some of your other photos? Glad you did not fall in as you were leaning. What we do for a photo. I have only seen one or two butterflies this year. I kid with my cousin in Texas as there are so many critters there and on the whole larger than ours.

@darsphotos Yes, there is a "close-up" setting that I use for flowers etc. I have a Canon Rebel T1i.
