The Great White Egret and Great Blue Heron are Not Friends
Blue Heron chases White Egret. Competing over fishing rights. The Blue Heron finally gave up and left as more people came to the park and he was afraid of them. The Egret stayed around and I provided the "bait" for him to catch his fish. Check out the other chase photo on my Extras page.
Thank you for viewing and commenting. Thank you for all the comments and fav's on yesterday's shot of the Great Blue Heron. You are awesome! I appreciate you very much and enjoy looking at everyone's photos.
Very nice capture to get both birds in focus and what looks like a deep DOF at a relatively wide open aperture setting Linda!! Maybe I'll experiment more using shutter priority and allow the camera to set the aperture and see if I get better results.
@revjoel Thank you for the comment. They are from the same species or family. There has been debate on whether the Great White Egret is just a color morph of the Great White Heron or if one is a subspecies.
@vickisfotos I don't know whether they are ever friends. I think they were arguing over territory - fishing rights. It is a small pond. The Blue Heron is a newcomer to this duck pond, this is at least the second year that I have seen the White Egret. I felt sorry for the Blue Heron and tried to help by throwing plenty of bread for bait into the water but it did not act like he knew what to do.
@skipt07 Skip, these birds are so fast that I have to set my T1I on the sports (auto) setting so that it will rapidly snap. The thing is to get a good focus on them in the beginning and be able to keep up with them, hold your breath and hope it stays well focused. Anyway, that's my theory.
I am sorry I have missed so many of your photos. Trying to catch up still. Love this photo. It is great of the two of them and the clarity is so incredible.
