Princess Daisy? by grizzlysghost

Princess Daisy?

Or Queen of Green?

My very first water drop splash experiment. I still have a LOT of fiddling around to do, but am mildly happy with the results thus far.

Edit: Ok, I am VERY happy with this. I do wish I had taken some time to edit this though; it is practically SOOC. I could have at least cleaned up all of the miscellaneous splash particles, maybe lighted it up a bit, toyed with contrast, sharpened, etc. I just felt I hadn't give you guys my best. But the more I look at it, the more I DO like it :)

Some of you guys might be having a hard time replicating this, so here are some details. This is done in my kitchen sink in a dish about 3 inches deep. Along the bottom of the dish, and up the back, I have laid green paper (which has actually bled and turned the water a little green as well). I cut the stem on this daisy close and plugged it into a lump of modeling clay which I then put into the dish. I filled the dish just high enough to fill the middle of the flower with about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of water (I did a lot of trial and error to find the right depth for a good crown... too deep and it won't crown... too shallow and you just get an explosion). I centered it directly under the drip and set up my camera. As this was done in full daylight, I had the kitchen lights on and another light to the side to help illuminate. Because of all this light, I couldn't just rely on the flash to stop the motion, so I cranked up my shutter speed as well and used the flash to help light it up. After that, it was all just timing. Drip, drip, drip, FLASH! Drip, drip, drip, FLASH! This was the best out of about 200 shots, so be patient and you can get the same results!

@digitalrn Thanks Rick! It took a while to get it just right. Shot after shot after shot. Watching that dripping water and the flash going off every few seconds made me have to go pee three times and feel like I was at a disco! :)

March 14th, 2012
Nicely done! After 2 weeks of messing with water drops, I never want to look at water again! It's making showering a little difficult. :)

Noe there is a perfect water drop ..crown flower and all!

Superb result!
March 14th, 2012

March 14th, 2012
@keyt427 Thanks Keyt!
@oblique Thanks Natalie! Ok, maybe more than mildly... ;)
@peterdegraaff Thanks Peter!
@riversdale Thanks Jolly! I played around with placement for a while. The crown has mostly to do with water depth and a little to do with how far the drip falls. Having the flower under the drip did make it a bit more challenging I think, but am not sure as I haven't tried it on a flat surface. It shouldn't take you too long to figure it out too, go for it!
March 14th, 2012

How do you know the dates of your pics that made the PP? Did you keep track or is the data somewhere on this site?
June 26th, 2013
@btorrey I wish the data was somewhere on this site! I just took a screen shot whenever it happened. Alexis created a script recently though that helps you track, but it only goes back to April. Here's yours that have made it since then: http://alexisbirkill.com/365project/popularpage/getuserdetails.php?username=%40btorrey
June 26th, 2013
Not sure how this came up on my suggested photo page today but it's very well timed as I've been pushed to do this as part of the get pushed challenge. Fav as it's amazing and also because it's really helped me out!
