Tighten Your Aperture by grizzlysghost

Tighten Your Aperture

For More Interesting Bokeh

While some of your best bokeh may come from a wide-open aperture, push the boundaries every so often. Set your "bokeh net" further away from the lens and crank down your aperture to about f/16 (play around a little bit); your bokeh might just take on the shape of your aperture opening. In this case, my old 50mm Takumar has 6 aperture blades so you get nice hexagon-shaped bokeh!

This shot is in response to a challenge issued to me by Kathy to shoot some "Forced Perspective." For more information on the "Get Pushed" challenges, visit here: http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/14244/get-pushed-week-8

@hopess13 Haha, yep! I haz mutitasks! :)
September 10th, 2012
Lol! This is great and love the title too! Fav! I think I have five blades based on a shot I got one time where this type thing happened.
September 10th, 2012
@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth! Some of my other lenses have between 12 and 16 blades, so the bokeh stays circular no matter what aperture you are on; another reason why I enjoy this lens so much. Wide open, everyone has a circle :)

Clever!!

@shutterbugger Thanks Jenn! :)

Oh my, so good. :)
September 10th, 2012
I love this Aaron! I was so hoping you would do the forced perspective option and you did :) I say this was a huge success! FAV

Also I appreciate lesson on aperture & bokeh! I just got my DSLR in May so I have the lens that came with the camera and the 55 - 200 lens. How do I find out how many blades they have? I look forward to working on my challenge from you as well.

Cool effect Aaron - well set up!

@copperheadglass Thanks Meredith!
@rockinrobyn Haha, thank you Robyn!
@myhrhelper Awesome, thanks Kathy! And thanks for the challenge; this one will definitely test my creativity! Concerning aperture blades in modern lenses (most do NOT have an aperture wheel, which is just stunning for an old-schooler like me). You can either look up the specs online, or do what I just did with my Canon 24-105: zoom it all of the way out, set your aperture to f/16 or around there, place our camera on "Bulb" and press the shutter release. Keeping your finger on the button, look down your lens and tilt the camera so the light shines down inside. You should be able to see your aperture blades. Unfortunately for me, all of my "Modern" lenses have enough blades to keep them pretty circular no matter the aperture.
