Solar by grizzlysghost

Solar

My first oil/water attempt.

As with many fantastic shots I find on 365, much more difficult (at least for me) than it would appear.

I applaud all who have done this and succeeded, you must have the patience of a saint, because I swear I was about to rampage around the kitchen breaking stuff! :)

For those wondering, the colors come from a dvd I was holding and tilting under the dish with the oil and water. I had low light coming in sideways under the dish (it was raised on a couple of glasses), so it reflected some nice colors up into the oil.

I stacked my 100mm macro onto Canon extension tubes EF12II and EF25II so I could get nice and cozy with my oil, 'cause that's just how I roll. ;)

Beautiful. Such great shot.
February 20th, 2013
You've succeeded beautifully. A very attractive shot! So, would you attempt this again?
February 20th, 2013
Yeah But you always seem to do everything bigger and better!! ;p
I love the colors you used and i think it is perfect! :)
February 20th, 2013
Very beautiful job though.
February 20th, 2013
Oh wow! I love this! This will be added to my bucket list of things to try :)
February 20th, 2013
@kazlamont Thanks Kazzy! Not for a long time I'm sure. I'll need to check off more of my bucket list and begin to forget what a hassle I had with this before revisiting. I will inevitably do it again though because it's quite a distance from what I was hoping to achieve.

@ellimae I have to lol at your discription as i have tried several of the great techniques of abstracts and artistic shots and i have failed dramatically at all of them..i still have not mastered the water crown, the smoke pic or the oil and water shot! And yes i have tried them all at least twice!! :) I ususally give up before i start breaking things! :)
February 20th, 2013
I haven't tried this. This looks awesome! Love the colors. FAV!
February 20th, 2013
Nice contrasts of light and shadow. Nice and vibrant too! Well done.
February 20th, 2013
This is better than the last one oil/water one I faved! fav
February 20th, 2013
Very cool!
February 20th, 2013
This is very nice.
February 20th, 2013
Lyn
nice job - i didn't ever get around to this one. . .
February 20th, 2013
Turned out great!
February 20th, 2013
Very nicely done. Love the colors from the dvd.
February 20th, 2013
I'd say you succeeded here as well - and you definitely get an A for effort! Thanks for sharing your process. Excellent!
February 20th, 2013
I did oil and water tonight too, but with a competely different outcome. What kind of oil did you use? I like the clarity of your bubbles.
February 20th, 2013
Awesome shot. Love the shapes and colors.
February 20th, 2013
nice shot!
February 20th, 2013
And I think I need some extension tubes! Just another thing to add to my must have list
February 20th, 2013
Awesome Aaron. Glad your rampage didn't start before you captured this great shot. Sure it may not be what you had visualized but it ranks up among the best oil/water shots I have seen. Also your witty statements have been cracking me up in the discussions. I have tried this but given up very fast and moved on.
February 20th, 2013
@lisabell I snuck the baby oil out of the bedroom for this one, it was THAT important! ;-) Actually, yes, baby oil because it's nice and clear. But at first all I was getting was one big puddle of oil on top of the water, so I stirred it up with a whisk, which then made a bunch of tiny bubbles, so I thought maybe the baby oil was too light so I used olive oil, with the same results, so I canned the whole contraption and went back to the baby oil. I can't be sure exactly what I did, but eventually I got some nice circles on the surface and started shooting with all sorts of rubbish under the oil plate. I was happiest with the dvd lighting and actually celebrated tossing the rest of the shots into the trash can! :)
February 20th, 2013
@bbf Haha, thanks Ben!
February 20th, 2013
@grizzlysghost I tried with baby oil and had the same issue. I tried it with olive oil tonight and the green it annoyed me. I put a drop of Dawn in the water because I read it helps keep the oil separate, but all it did was cause the oil to suddenly part and cling to the sides of the dish. Plus there's the occasional dog hair that inevitably seems to make its way into the water. I gave up, too, but didn't come up with great results you did. I ended up diffusing it in ColorEfex and posting it anyway. I hate doctoring photos
February 20th, 2013
Very nice, Aaron. Love the colors!
February 20th, 2013
yeah i pretty much love this. don't know why you got so frustrated! looks great!
February 20th, 2013
Very cool. I love the variation in sizes and colours!
February 20th, 2013
I agree, it was Tough!!!!! Yours looks great
February 20th, 2013
Neat solar system you have there
February 20th, 2013
These are definitely tough! You got some really nice definition in your drops. I felt like mine just looked flat, flat, flat.
February 20th, 2013
@archaeofrog It took a LOT of fiddling with the light!
February 20th, 2013
@grizzlysghost Indeed! I used olive oil when I tried and found that I had to throw some drops of detergent at it, which finally made it clump up with a little more oompf! (Ended up with more of a beehive though, http://365project.org/archaeofrog/365/2012-11-23 )
February 20th, 2013
Very nice

Ann
Wow, nice work, and thanks for the explanation of how you did it.
February 20th, 2013
Turned out great!! I love doing these, each one is so different
February 20th, 2013
Amazing!! Love the colors!! With the help from your explanations, I'll have to try it sometime!!
February 20th, 2013
@grizzlysghost Thanks for telling us all your trials and what eventually worked. The result is a luminous beauty.
February 20th, 2013
impressive!
February 20th, 2013
stunning!
February 20th, 2013
What an incredible capture! I haven't tried this yet... I love the colors you captured :) Especially that one little multi-colored planet :) Awesome!
February 20th, 2013
Great colour and clarity! I have only ever used olive oil. I take a knive and cut through the large blobs to separate them and thus preventing the irritating bubbles.
February 20th, 2013
Fabulous Aaron simply beautiful.
February 20th, 2013
@salza Ohhh, great trick!
February 20th, 2013
Excellent first time!

February 20th, 2013
ahhh nice!!!!!

This is really fantastic. I would have never known what it was.
February 20th, 2013

February 20th, 2013
great job! I would like to attempt it again, but this time not using one of my good shirts as a back drop. Glad you kept at it!
February 20th, 2013
You've done well. I used wrapping paper under mine.
February 20th, 2013
OOh this is lurvely Aaron!
February 20th, 2013
wow awesome shot!
February 20th, 2013
Nicely done - and excellent tips in your caption and in the comment thread. Might have to give it a go one day. I'm not holding on to a specific bucket list that much, but well, if there's something to be learned from stuff like this... ;)
February 20th, 2013
I like how each little bubble is so clearly defined
February 20th, 2013
Beautiful! I'll have to give this a try one day
February 20th, 2013

And THANKS to everyone for your comments and faves!

what a great result for an first attempt! :) super!
February 20th, 2013
Love these colourful abstracts of oil and water. fav!
February 20th, 2013
For a first attempt this is excellent. I can't wait to see what you are able to capture with more practice and experimentation.
February 21st, 2013
Very well done. I think these are kind of fun to do, and intend to do some more. My problem has been that I get air bubles on my flass, no matter what temerature water I use...must be heat coming off of the light that I set by it.
February 21st, 2013
Oh, very nice. Spotless circles.
February 21st, 2013
Great photo! Loved your explanation of how you got the shot.
February 21st, 2013
Wow Awesome.I will be trying this.Love Love Love it.
February 21st, 2013
