Of Sunsets and Rainbows

For every photo opportunity you see, there are dozens around just waiting to be seen.

*Composite photo of me sitting as still as possible for about 20 minutes while my camera was clicking away. Made up of 241 images stacked on top of each other using StarStax.

See one single image of those 241 here: http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g349/GrizzlysGhost/ScreenShot2013-04-10at120205AM_zps3fb5e4b3.png

For inquiring minds: If any of you have sat for a few minutes watching a sunset; and especially for those of you who have shot sunsets over the course of several minutes, you know how fast the sky changes. Even if there is no wind, and the clouds are sitting still, the light plays across them pretty dramatically; but for only about 15 or 20 minutes. It is a very narrow window, but so much happens in that window! What you see in this image is 20-minutes worth of sunset; began 10 minutes before and ending 10 minutes after (give or take a few minutes). As each photo was taken, the clouds had moved ever so slightly, and the light changed ever so slightly, and when the images are combined like this they give you a picture of the entire show in one frame; that is what I'm trying to achieve anyway. Now you know my vision in regards to these "cloudslip" shots! :)

Several people are giving this technique a try and are producing some incredible images, make sure you check out my tag "cloudslip" over to the right so you can give them a gander as well!

And, why the cowboy hat and the TLR? I really have no idea. :) The toughest part about this shot was trying to stay as still as possible in a hard chair on a cold evening! I mostly did okay, but my leg just wouldn't stay still! LOL

And if you've read through this far, give yourself a gold star and take a look at this image LARGE; the clouds are pretty cool against black! Thanks!

April 10th, 2013
@bella_ss Thanks Sheralee, go for it! And actually, I do have a little pain in my neck now :) The things we do!
April 10th, 2013
Sorry to hear about the pain you have now, but I must say it was worth it (as long it's not my neck, haha). The final result is incredible!!!
I've been wondering how you achieve these fascinating cloudslips, so thanks for thorough info on that.
Will probably try it one day, but will have to work hard on finding someone who will pose still for 20 minutes! I doubt I could do it for 5 minutes only... ;)
April 10th, 2013
I couldn't hit the fav button quick enough! Was enthralled to read how you did this and the effect you achieved......241 images and 20 minutes sitting still! That is incredible! Would love to try this!
April 10th, 2013
Well this may have taken you 20 min to achieve but it took me .2 sec to fav this. So awesome in so many ways.
April 10th, 2013
Wonderful result! I can't imagine sitting still for that long! I think that tapping foot just adds to the drama. Fav for sure.
April 10th, 2013
Wonderful shot - I can't sit still for 5 minutes, let alone 20! : )
April 10th, 2013
Amazing capture. :) You've obviously got a lot more patience than me but it was clearly well worth it.
April 10th, 2013
lol I can't believed you managed to stay that still for so long! As a constant fidgeter I'd have no hope! xD Amazing image, and I appreciate the explanation :)
April 10th, 2013
First class selfie - fav.
April 10th, 2013

April 10th, 2013
That was quite the composite, and to sit still for 20 minutes, oh my, that would be a tough assignment for me.

April 10th, 2013
Totally amazing work. Very creative!
April 10th, 2013
Just wonderful Aaron. I like to think you were tapping your foot to some song in your head while sitting there all that time. The rest of you hasn't moved a bit!! Do you use a remote, or have a set up on your camera that automatically takes a photo at a time interval determined by you?
Fav of course.
April 10th, 2013
I love following your cloudslip progression and really hope to try it some time. Thanks for all the info....read it all. Bonus points! :)
April 10th, 2013
This one looks as if a fireworks display is taking place behind you. Amazing that you could keep your head and face still for so long! Must have been quite still or your camera strap would be blurred. Altogether awesome. Fav!
April 10th, 2013
Mac
Gorgeous! That patience and discipline shows in the images you produce. You must have had to leave Bennet in the house. :o)
April 10th, 2013
Awesome! I love the angle you shot at. To me it has almost an "Alice in Wonderland" kind of feel to it. (Tim Burton's version of course!)
April 10th, 2013
Weird shit man! Great effect!
April 10th, 2013
The gold star is for you,Aaron!Fav! Thanks for sharing the tips !

April 10th, 2013
I just got my Gold Star! What an awesome shot! In the old days, isn't that the way they took pictures by sitting still for a long time. That's why the old photos the people never really looked happy. FAV!!!!
April 10th, 2013
too cool for words no. 2! :D
April 10th, 2013
Fabulous job Aaron. I tried this the other day without intending too as I didn't have my tripod but was dying to anyway. Was fun to play with. Fav.
April 10th, 2013
Awesome! I don't think I could sit still for that long. :)
April 10th, 2013
whoaaa
awesome shot!
April 10th, 2013
@simster Thanks Simmy! I have a tethered remote for my camera ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164271-REG/Canon_2477A002_Timer_Remote_Controller_TC_80N3.html) that I can set to trip the shutter at certain intervals. Each of these exposures were 5 seconds long with about a second between each shot.
April 10th, 2013
@onie Thanks Leonie! I wish my camera was able to set up shots automatically! I have to use an attached remote to set up exposure sequences, but it works pretty well :) See above for link to the remote I use.
April 10th, 2013
@dandolo Thanks Dandolo! The funny thing is, I had no idea what was going on behind me and was concerned there wouldn't be any color and the whole thing would be a dud. I will set up a mirror somewhere next time so I can actually see what I'm taking a shot of :)
April 10th, 2013
@riverlandphotos Haha, I sure did! He would have been all over me! :)
April 10th, 2013

April 11th, 2013
very cool! looks like fireworks going off behind you :)
April 11th, 2013
Well, you did really well with your head on this shot. The foot isn't a problem.

When I first looked at this, I thought it was jet contrails as they drifted through the sky. Interesting to see how the clouds move like they do based upon looking at your one image on PhotoBucket. Very cool.
April 11th, 2013
So impressive... Well deserved to be on PP
April 11th, 2013
Great selfies at the same time...I laughed about the leg...who CAN keep it still when it's crossed like that....I had been thinking there wasn't any wind because the camera strap was still! These are really cool.
