Aaron, I was reading that you'd like more constructive criticism in one of the threads but honestly- what would I say about this?!! I love it. I love the reflections and the composition. Besides I'm a sucker for water drops in any form!
BTW- May I say that you are specifically invited to provide any suggestion for improvement thay you may have on ANY of my photos. I promise, I won't bite even if I disagree!
@terryvet92 Haha, indeed! :) @lorraineb Haha, thank you so much Lorraine! @psychographer Thank you so much Lisa! I had to push my aperture all of the way to f/8 to make sure I had a depth of field strong enough to keep it semi-focused :)
@danacarruthers Thank you Dana! :) @kellc Thanks Kelly, this was on a tripod :) @tkeen Thank you so much Toni! We had a sudden shower on a relatively sunny day so I jumped at the opportunity! I had to widen my aperture to make sure the front half of the drops stayed in focus :) @swan Thank you so much!
@kamb Thank you so much Karen! As you probably know, the images that are refracted through a drop of liquid are upside down, so I flipped this image so the image of the garden in the drop would be right-side-up. So, the round drops are actually on the bottom side of this garlic stem (which is also round. Since the stem is round, the surface "skin" of the water droplet can't spread out like it would on a flat leaf. So... there you have it :) What I do after a rainstorm is go on a search for a drop with all of the right elements and sometimes I get lucky! :)
Thanks Aaron, you sure got lucky. You just dropped a penny for me! I need to find rounder things to refract through... and you are just being tricky flipping your shot...very clever. Now you know what I'm going to do after rain next time!!!
Aaron, you make it very difficult for any of us to give any sort of criticism when you take such brilliant shots! I mean, you even captured the perfect sparkle on the drops. Superb :)
Aaron, it's amazing how clear those images on the droplets are, great idea, and without reading the comment above where you told us you inverted the iamge, I would not have thought about that.
@marieooi Thank you so much Marie! :) @digitalrn Thanks Rick! I have posted quite a few drop shots and globes before, and they usually make more sense inverted; otherwise some people have a hard time making out what they are looking at :) @johnnyfrs Thanks John!
WOW!! I am a water drop picture addict, if there is such thing. Does these need a macro lens? I have tried multiple times to take a closer shot and can only get so much clarity. Thank you for taking time to provide guidance.
@mantha Thank you Samantha! :) @smithak Thanks Smitha! I definitely use a macro lens for all of my water drop shots, and my very favorite lens is the Canon 100mm f/2.8. One of the greatest features of this lens is it's short focal length; meaning you can get right up close to the subject. Couple that with the 100mm capability and this lens consistently gives great results! Many of us here on 365 use this lens :) http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_176726_-1
@sewsharyn Thank you so much Sharyn! @shezzyj Thank you so much Shez! I have had a few on PP recently, so I may get put in time out for awhile. I might be surprised to see this there! :) @copperheadglass Thanks Meredith! :)
Whatever made you stick those glass globes on a green skateboard? Or were they mirrors?
What - you mean they were water droplets on a leaf?! No way!!!!!
Aaron, I feel like I've just taken a mini-lesson; thanks so much for the explanations and tips. I had FINALLY just discovered the need to up the aperture for clarity in some of my flower shots from some hint at digital photography last week. Little did I know I just need to continue watching what YOU do!
I tried to read everything in the comments, so forgive me if this question was already asked and answered: do you use a dedicated macro lens, or are you cropping to get that close? Either way, it's gorgeous!
@ronah Thanks Rona! I use a dedicated macro (Canon 100mm prime), and couple it at times with extension tubes (EF25 II and EF12 II). The beauty of this lens is the focal distance is very small (I can get as close as 6 inches away), which really blows the image up at 100mm. The extension tubes allow me to get even closer, which results in even more magnification. :) This shot was just the 100mm though, without the tubes.
The best part about this are the sun burst on them. Great idea to turn it all upside down, I do that on some of mine if it makes a better shot. really a wonderful shot.
Wow! This is amazing! I've seen so many shots from you on the PP that I am just gonna have to follow you! :o) It's so nice that you explain how you got the shot! Truly amazing shot and fav!
