Disco Inferno by grizzlysghost

Disco Inferno

No Photoshops were harmed in the making of this image; just a flashlight and some string were used for this effect :)

Setup: The speaker is lying on the floor, and over each woofer are red and orange strings of thread that I'm moving around to simulate the flames. Remember, you can cause a blur effect with long exposures by keeping things moving while the shutter's open.

I picked up some red thread and orange thread at thrift for under a dollar and strung it quite a few times between a couple of chairs to get a nice "rope" of red/orange color (also in this photo you can see the speaker lying on the floor by Bennett):

After winding the thread, I pulled one end off the chair and tied it into a knot so it will all hold together. For this image, I kept the other end "uncut" because I wanted a more solid rope, but I will probably cut the other end so the threads will spread out and give a "fuller" flame next time:

Here's a pretty lousy shot of the setup showing the speaker on the floor, the "thread rope" I used to simulate the flames and the flashlight I used, as well as the position of my camera. It was pretty dark in the room so I just used the flashlight for illumination, which is quite adequate for a long exposure like this.

After figuring out the best setup (time, aperture, etc), I tripped the shutter and ran the flashlight over the front of the speaker to give it some light, then moved the rope above each speaker in kind of a waving pattern, all the while shining the flashlight on the rope so it would be lit up. It takes several tries to get it where you like it; I took about 10 shots in all; so my best advice is to play around, try new things until you get something you like :)

June 15th, 2013
@rvwalker Thanks Ross! My mind is usually pretty active, but I get most of my ideas when I'm shooting something else; I may go out to shoot flowers and wind up with a whole setup shooting timed exposure on my stream or some such nonsense :) I want to try this again with some variety of blue and white so it's like cool flames :)
June 15th, 2013
Now that is hot, very cleverly done
