Pearl

I wanted to give my blue moon shot a little more interest so I calculated where it would appear over the mountain behind my house and set up to wait so I could get some trees in the foreground. These trees by the way are several miles away from me, at the very top of the mountain behind me.

I use an app on my iPhone called SkyView which helps me pinpoint pretty accurately where everything is in the sky, including satellites, space debris, planets, etc. Here's a shot of me gauging the moon well before it rose.

You can see the moon is "through" the mountain I'm pointing my phone at (you can see blue Neptune just below the graphic of the moon). I'd check every half hour, then every 10 minutes, then every couple, until I knew where the moon would rise.

When focusing on the moon, I turn live view on and zoom in so I can make sure I have the best focus I can manage (manually). Also, having it blown up like this lets me know when the camera has settled down so I can minimize blur from camera shake. Here's a setup shot:

Specific details of this shot can be found in my exif.
You don't have a man in your moon like us Aussies . It just doesn't look as cool.

@tammeray My apologies, I've been working on a way to spin the moon around but my minions keep messing it up. :)

Very cool composition, and I loved seeing your "set ups" and hearing about your preparations. @tammeray -- in Japan, we see a Rabbit in the Moon.

Not that the full moon on its own is boring or anything, but the trees really do add so much to this shot. Count me among those who appreciate the setup info.

Fantastic! :)

A terrific shot and a fav. The trees against the moon are really beautiful. Thanks for the info. Having made my first attempt at a moon shot last night that was really helpful. I wasn't unhappy with my attempts, but the moon was too high in the sky with only a 200 mm lens (though on a crop sensor).

Great shot. With our narrow valley, it didn't appear at my house until this morning, about the time I was getting ready for work. And I so wanted to try my newest lens on it...oh, well. Next time.
