Sound of Summer

There are certain sounds that identify a season. It may be rain hitting the wi dow in the spring or the dampening of sound with a heavy snowfall. For me, my favorite sound of a season the the roar of a race track full of sprint cars as they come around turn four at the start of a race. The sound builds and washes over you as the blur of a track full of cars whiz by. The sound can shake your insides as the smell of alcohol and gas are on the breeze.

Unfortunately the local track was torn down many years ago, but one a hour away is still running. I get out there every summer, but too few times each season. But the joy of hearing, seeing and smelling the cars is enjoyed each time.

This photo from the pits is of the third place winner last Saturday, Bud Kaeding. His grandfather, Howard, was a favorite of mine when he was racing. I have seen his father and brother win many a race as well.

These are 360 sprint cars that race on a quarter mile dirt track. I have seen 410's race on the same track, but they really are too fast for such a small track and do better on the half mile.
