We went out for a family meal today & the bowling club was in action . We play crown green bowling in Lancashire which means the green is raised in the middle & each wood has a weight built in the side so that it has a bias when rolling. When you send your wood out you say'' finger '' or ''thumb'' to tell your playing partner which bias you have played. of course the one nearest the small wood that is sent out first wins. I used to play bowls before we moved & always enjoyed it as a very social sport & believe it or not exciting !!! Talking of sport Blackpool have been relegated !!
Much too chilly for me to try outdoor activities up here today....vest shirt jumper and scarf when went to post letter.....but this is lovely! Was asking Allan how Blackpool got on :(
Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I daren't go on Facebook - my Blackpool relatives will be crying. I loved their set of photos from Wembley last year - all anticipation, celebration and then tears of joy - and now tears of the other kind!
Crown green is, of course, the only kind worth playing - I'm a bit distressed to see they've moved from flat caps to baseball - my grandad wouldn't have approved of that!
Not that many flat caps now Judith, I think we are coming to the end of an era there ! We were so disappointed about Blackpool & they were beating Man United 2-1 at one point ! Never mind it's only a game !! Feel sorry for Ian Holloway he has been such an inspiration to the whole town of Blackpool !
crown green bowling Pat , lol, I think our friends from USA will not 'get' crown green bowling...where are the pins :) . A very 'Lancashire Scene' Pat, evoking memories of my youth ....not that ever I played mind you !!
We have lawn bowls here too Pat - not sure if it's the same rules and conditions. It used to be the sport for retired people, but more and more young people are taking it up now. Must say that I've never taken much notice of it, but those who play, take it very seriously. You see them on the green, wearing their all white gear, looking very intensely at the result of the bowl which has just taken place. This is a great capture.
this is great! there was a lawn bowling green where I grew up (its actually still there despite all the development - shocking!) and I have been so fond of watching all the older folks having their fun. Hmmmmm. . .now I'm getting to be one of those older folks. . .maybe it's time to learn. :)
