This church is standing along side the castle in Lancaster
There has been a place of worship on this site since 630 AD but the present building dates from the 11th century. It is a Grade 1 listed building so a very important part of British history.
The lighting in here was lovely & the ladies were getting ready for a wedding today arranging flowers in big buckets. The weddings they have here are the main source of income to the church & I think I read that they can have up to 400 in a year !! There are two separate chapels, a cafe & small shop too. They hold concerts in the church & it has been on Songs of Praise several times.
At the recent royal wedding they put a big screen in the front of the altar & the congregation came in their best hats & watched the wedding from their pews ! There is of course a beautiful sounding set of bells which call people to worship.
I actually went back to check that wedding figure but it is probably right as they have three today alone !!!!
The 11th century ~ that's just amazing to me. Over here in the States, buildings are eligible for listing as "historical" from the early 20th century. :) You are so rich in history. This is an absolutely gorgeous church with spectacular architecture and detail. The lighting is beautiful. Well done, Pat!
beautiful churches. I find that churches have the most beautiful natural light that pours in through the windows. This is a perfect shot to show the beauty in having faith.
Beautiful light you have captured coming into this fab church. What a great idea to celebrate the royal wedding in it with a screen up front as you already have the atmosphere. This reminded me of the church Rick and I were married in 27 years ago. We had the bells ringing as we came out after the ceremony, they are so lovely to hear.
What a gorgeous shot! I love that candelabra (sp?) So do the weddings all have to share flowers and colour schemes? Does it do non-religious weddings as well - it is a beautiful setting? Sorry - I'm fascinated by the 3 a day!
@judithg The Priory is an Anglican Church & as far as I can gather the usual rules apply to any one wanting to get married in that particular church eg residency , baptised in the church etc Of course Lancaster is quite a large town so there is probably quite an uptake especially if the rules are a bit lenient . They must share flowers too, the ones the ladies were arranging were mostly white & greenery. We have a church near here at Singleton which is very picturesque & the vicar there will bend over backwards to help you meet requirements as it is their biggest money earner.

It's exactly as I remember it - lovely lovely light and rich colours.
