An old haunt of mine as this church is situated at the top of Winckley Street Preston, a street I walked up & down twice a day the whole of my school life from five years old to leaving at seventeen. It was a church used by our school only occasionally as the Convent had it's own chapel but a few times if we doubled up with the boys College next door we used this church !!
We were forbidden to mix with the boys on pain of detention or worse & I must have been very innocent because I can't remember talking to the boys at all !!
Have processed this in black & white as I am trying to do more in this medium. I think it's OK but I still prefer colour !
My fathers name was Wilfred so it is a church I like for that reason.
I like this, the b&w shows off the gates well and I like those impressive metal gates. I've been reluctant to do b&w myself, I think I've only done two in my project so far so I may try to do some more.
Nice! Really interesting shapes and patterns......could do a maths lesson with this!
And do you know I hardly talked to the boys even in our mixed school! Even in Physics where there were 4 girls and 18 boys!
@louisefrance Funnily Louise I love other peoples b/w but never like mine! I am sure it's because I never see others b/w photos in actual colour but I have to choose between the two & so always prefer the colour picture.
How beautiful this looks in b&w . . especially with the wrought iron fence there. Has quite a history and memory for you. Love the name . . Wilford. :)
Pat this is lovely. you should try B/W more often. You've got some good textures and tones. Photographing only part of the building gives it more impact and shooting through the gates makes it really atmospheric and is a touch of genius for composition.
I must +FAV this and I expect it to be on the PP this time tomorrow :)
Now I should have read this first - I know where this is now and I've looked up Newman College - we used to go to St Augustine's which is now classrooms & sports centre - they were still doing the renovations last time I was in Preston. We had a lovely chapel in the school but used to go to St Augustine's at least once every half term I should think. Of course there were NO boys anywhere in the vicinity and Sr Gabriel used to walk out before the end of the Leavers' service because the girls insisted on singing Jerusalem. It's a fabulous B&W - FAV!
@judithg And I should have read this first as I realise you know where it is now !! Might show you the inside of this church tomorrow !! Many thanks for the fave !!
I love the iron railings and all the detail in them. Queen Mary's was similar - the boys' school was next door but there was a huge sandbank built to separate us and we weren't allowed to talk to the boys! Those were the days!!
