Although very windy today the sun was streaming in the widows highlighting all the dust!
I sort of had a dust around with the duster & got distracted by books.
We have a total of seven various book cases around the rooms here & as I can always find an excuse to read a book I had a little browse.
I was surprised to find I have four copies of A Child's Garden of Verse.
My late mum loved poetry & when she died I brought some of her books home to my house.
I had never really looked at them much but she was a great lover of poetry particularly the poems of Mary Webb.
I was touched to see she had marked with a cross all the ones she liked.
The poems are quite simple & mostly about nature & the countryside.
Snowdrop Time
Ah, hush! Tread softly through the rime,
For there with blackbird singing, or a thrush.
Like coloured beads the elm-buds flush:
All the trees dream of leaves & flowers & light.
And see! The northern bank is much more white
Than frosty grass , for now is snowdrop time.
Three good things:
1. Lovely to see mums writing in her books & discovering the poems she loved.
2. Alex seems to be having a great time in Europe...Barcelona today.
3. A doctor in the house!!
Lovely warm, homely shot. It was funny, @julzmaioro and I were just talking about how we enjoy shots of the inside of your lovely home and find 365 interesting because it gives a snapshot of others' lives.
Now's the time to sort out Harry's knee! I always get a bit emotional when I get out Nigel's mum's Christmas recipe so I decided to hand write some recipes when Rachel went to university and I was going to get my mum and sister to write some in but I seem to have lost the book. The lady who made it runs book binding courses though so I'm thinking I might go and make one myself!
Yes my Mum loved poetry too and in fact i used to write poetry and I have had several published poems with the books to prove it! My house is full of books too and I have some of Mum's poetry books. It is lovely to read some of these lovely poems and I must admit I was looking for a particular book but got distracted into reading another. Nice homely shot and great that the sun was shining in even if it did show up the dust!
Naw this has bought a tear to my eye... My Mum loved poetry as well, and she was very good at reading it .. perhaps it was her boarding school education... She really loved Pam Ayes.. all ways had a giggle at her one's and she use to like reading them at her WI meetings... Thanks for this Pat you have stirred up a lovely memory... lovely sunny spot to sit a read...
Such a wonderful photo, Pat. And your narrative really coincides with my life experiences. My grandmother loved poetry and A Child's Garden of Verse was one of the many books she gave to me when I was small. I also still have another of my favorites that she gave to me...'When We Were Very Young' by A.A. Milne.
My other grandmother left me many of her favorite cookbooks with her favorite recipes x'd and little notes added in the margins. :)

I have just been to take Lydia to the train station & as he is arriving by train I did wonder if I had passed him on the platform without knowing! A personal thing such as recipes, poems or any sort of memory written down is one of the best things you can leave behind! @judithg you are a very talented lady Rosie....the hidden things we learn! A published poet now that is something to be very proud of. @peggysirk As I was saying to @judithg the written word is something to treasure! A A Milne now there's a nzme to take you back...I too have that book upstairs. I was reading a few of the Kipling ones & just thought how innocent childhood was in those days! So glad everyone is remembering things. @kimcrisp that's the best way of spending a few hours Kim......I have my Kindle & love it but still like s proper book!

Well make that now a burnt muffin....but I'm stoking the fire in my belly, may be a long night, littlest burning up a temp, asleep now but I doubt he will remain do all night.
@newbank oh poor little boy, he is having a rough time! My youngest grandson is having lots of off days too at the moment, he never seems to be well.. I hope you don't have too bad a night! Take it easy while you can! I am always relieved when young children have mum at home during the day & you haven't got that awful decision whether to send them to nursery or have a day off work....sorry I am rambling !thanks for your comment!
Looks like the perfect corner to sit and read. My Mum had A Child's Garden of Verse she loved poetry. My sister has the book now. I think I can beat you with bookcases, ha ha we have 25 bookcases scattered around 7 of the rooms in our house. You name a subject and we have probably got a book on it.
Dust is good. I have a plaque in my kitchen which says "This house is protected by a coat of dust", So you will be quite safe.
@onewing I like the sound of your house Babs.....I think I might come & decamp & check out all those books! That is a vast amount of books....I did throw lots out when I bought my kindle, most of the ones you only read once! We have better things to do than dust I reckon!
@happypat You are more than welcome anytime Pat. I did have a bit of a dust yesterday as we have got my cousin arriving today. I lost my duster for a while though when I got sidetracked by one of the books. ha ha. I had a bit of a throw out of books a while ago too, had to make room for the new ones. Most of our books are reference type books and anything other than that tend to be biographies which I read a lot of.
Thats a beautiful bookcase there - as nice as the books are I expect! Apparently is feng sui or something whateveryoucallit to have books to look at when you come into a room! I wonder if your Doctor is as handsome as Dirk Bogarde?
I love this picture, but then I love books and poetry books are an especial favourite. My love of literature comes straight from my mum who's still an avid reader at 94.
@maggiemae he arrived last night quite late Maggiemae.....very Scottish with the most Scottish name you could think of.....had a whisky in the sitting room & I am now waiting his arrival for breakfast....a very nice chap! The bookcase is a piece of furniture Harry & I bought together with a small dresser in the hall must forty years ago....I love them because theybarecsmall & neat & oak.
@ceilidh I have loved the chat & memories this photo has brought up.....funny how our mums are the poetry lovers.....wonder if our kids can say the same when we are gone ?
Love this cosy corner Pat. I would be unable to pass it without sitting down and checking out the books. My Mum loved poetry and could still remember poems she had learnt at school. Our house has bookcases in practically every room. I sent loads of books to Oxfam last ear as we couldn't accommodate any more. Mostly ones I knew we would never read again. I hated doing it but at least felt they were going on to one of the Oxfam book shops so would have another home.
@thistle yes there gets to a point when some have to go. Of course I hardly buy any fiction books now although I will buy the paperback version if I particularly like it. Of course some books have to be hard back & I love a book you can dip in & out of. Thanks Joyce.
Your shots that include your home are always such a pleasure to see. A real lived in home where reading poems is more important than dusting. Full of keepsakes and loved treasures. So I had to go to a bookshelf and dig out the poem book that I used to read with my grand daughter! It is called the childrens book of rhyme and verse by Eric Kincaid. I had forgotten how lovely it was.
Gorgeous heartwarming photo and text. It was obviously a very special morning. And you're so good at connecting with all your friends who comment. I'm just trying to catch up. ...too busy at school this week.
@sarah19 I have been making a conscious effort to reply to each comment Sallie but shan't always be able to just because of the time it takes. I do like doing it because it's amazing the conversations you can have!
@happypat mine will. They're both avid readers. When they were little their dad didn't read at all unless it was the paper or a fishing magazine. At the time we had a circular rug on the floor and one day when he came in we were all lying tummy down on the floor , heads in the circle, reading. He went out and came back a little later while later with a book and muttered something about - if you can't beat them join them - he too became an Avis pd reader until illness stopped him!

@judithg Well I spoke too soon the good doctor hadn't arrived yet!!
