The sheep grazing on these fields have been a bit of a nightmare. Not in lamb they are just being over wintered & will be going home soon. The guy who owns these fields is in Thailand & has rented the fields out until he starts ploughing this Spring.
They have all got long straggly wool & I can't tell you how many have been stuck in the hedges.....it's bothered us a lot & Harry & Neville from down the lane plus Alex when she was here have spent lots of time untangling them from the briars.
They look like they haven't much to eat here but the field was planted with turnips, they have lots of grass on the river bank & they has hay in this feeder.
Three good things:
1. Syrup in a bottle for pouring over porridge.
2. A lie in this morning!
3. My lovely sister has today finished her chemo & radiation treatment today, she has nine months of Herceptyn injections in front of her then she has finished!
Somebody is putting out the winter feed for these sheep so there is someone to be responsible! Not very, I think though. Should have been shorn long ago. The herceptyn doesn't sound too good but is obviously a known treatment.
Lovely farming image. The sheep in the front right looks like she is dragging round a lump of fleece, bless her! I bought pouring syrup today too!! Great that your sister is nearing the end of treatment, unfortunately it seems to be a way of life now for so many. All the best to your lovely sister x
@lucypics snap then lucy....someone wanted syrup on their porridge last week & I had to put the tin on the table complete with sticky lid! Thanks for good wishes for my sister.
@maggiemae Well they are very lax about going round them....not our way of farming but they do come with hay for the feeder......out of sight out of mind sometimes! Hope you got John's jacket back!
@gijsje It's a nasty thing to have Bep isn't it......my sister has been really badly affected by the whole thing...the treatment seems to have been brutal!
All good wishes to your sister. You capture some lovely country shots, Pat - this is great. We saw sheep today, all heads down in a field, apparently feeding on earth, no grass in sight and could not understand it.
A lovely rural scene but perhaps not quite so lovely when you consider the sight of this land the poor sheep are on --soggy ground , nothing to graze I expect they are in lamb and need all the nourishment and strength at this stage .A fav !
So pleased your sister has finished the Chemo and Radiation treatments ! I wish her all the very best wishes from me -- the injections can not be as bad as the chemo I hope the time will go quickly for her !
@beryl They aren't in lamb Beryl......more food than looks here...this is a winter turnip field & they have the run of 200 acres.......plenty of grass on 28 acres of river bank which you can't see here. So not as bad a ps it looks but there wool is dropping off as you can see. Just here to be fattened up probably. Thank you so much for good wishes for sister!
@quietpurplehaze They can nibble very close to the ground Hazel & do a pasture so much good getting all the little weed roots etc. could be turnips like this one......these aren't in lamb so can live on nothing much but in lamb sheep need much more of course. They are not our sheep btw.
Lovely shot Pat. We have the same problem. Sheep with absentee landlords! I found one with it's leg trapped in-between the boards of a footbridge. I couldn't leave it as it struggled if I did so had to stand in the pouring rain ringing round friends until I found a kind neighbour who arrived armed with a crowbar and the wherewithall to clean up the leg which was skinned down to the bone. I kept on eye on the leg and it healed well. The sheep found me as soon as I went into the field. Good job as I would have had trouble sorting it out every day.
So sorry about your sister. Horrible treatment but so worthwhile in the end.
Worrying for you as well.
Lucky sheep that you have helped them out in their hour of need - and not even yours! Love the bright red feeder in the drab winter setting warming in more ways than one!
@thistle Why is it that sheep seem to get left to their own devices so much? I know it's difficult when they are away from home but they should be checked everyday. They are notorious for just giving up & dying too. Well done Joyce you did so well there....seeing it heal so well would be a great reward! Thanks for my sisters good wishes too.
Good for the red - otherwise it looks so bleak - and cold and damp - good thing for their long fuzzy coats!! Best wishes for your sister and prayers for a complete and smooth recovery.
I was loving the farm scene...until I realized from your comments and other posts that these fellows aren't being all that well tended. Shows how much I know about farming. I still love the look of the bleak winter field and the 'overgrown' sheep.
Wishing your sister a very good outcome with her next treatment protocol, Pat. So glad that she has completed the chemo and radiation. I know that was a miserable time for her. Sending good thoughts her way!
I'm so glad your sister's chemo is over. (I'm waiting for the results of my lovely daughter Siobhan's biopsy today. Can't settle to anything) the sheep look to have had a bleak time.

Your nr. 3 immediately reminded me of my daughter's treatment 10 years ago when she was only 31.Thank God she is okay now.

Hope all goes well with your sister.
It really makes the picture.
