High street blues! by happypat

High street blues!

I haven’t been into Preston for months so I was really surprised to see how very quiet Fishergate was. It’s the main shopping street in the city & it was dead as a doornail!
Internet shopping is doing its worst! Hopefully because it was a little early in the day perhaps but when I remember back when I was young sometimes specially on a Saturday you could hardly move for shoppers!

Three good things:
1. More stuff to the charity shop!
2. The tennis season has started!
3. Delicious praline soft toffees from New Orleans.
Nice wide footpath.. room for lots of shoppers.. Great time to shop..

Yes , it does look rather deserted doesn't it ! Lovely wide pavements would suite me well with my buggy !! -

Amazon is changing the shopping world. This looks like such a nice shopping center!

A sign of the time, unfortunately!

Where I live I have Walmart, Dollar Store and two of those stores that buy excess etc and cell cheap. Internet shopping is a big help.

@julzmaioro yes you didn’t trip over anyone that’s for sure!
June 20th, 2019
@gijsje @louannwarren @kwiksilver Yes unfortunately it is a sign of the times plus the business rates for shops in the centre of towns.

@beryl Ideal for your buggy Beryl....this is a pedestrian way so ideal for families. A bit of a strange thing that the streets are cleared of vehicles for shoppers & there aren’t that many! Must be busier at weekend perhaps!

@joansmor Yes I admit to doing a bit of internet shopping myself Joan, it’s so easy pick & click!

Shop rent and rates going up. Our High Street has charity shops and fast food outlets in abundance

I looks very deserted it is a shame so many shops are closing
June 20th, 2019
I don't altogether trust internet shopping - it might be faulty, not the right size, won't do what you wanted....so like to browse in the real shops. These pavements are so clean.
You are eating these praline toffees? Hope they don't pull your teeth out!

Nice street view

@maggiemae oh no they are so soft maggie, absolutely delicious!
June 20th, 2019
@mave yes charity shops galore & the busiest shops in town...I have been stocking up the local ones!!
June 20th, 2019
These streets like the one in your picture are sure a nicer way to shop than the local Walmart, but that is about all we have around here

So sad re the internet shopping’s impact on places like this

It is sad what the internet shopping is doing to real stores. But when I go in a store and it does not carry what I want, it makes me have to shop the internet. I make Pralines from a recipe out of my old Better Homes and Garden Cook Book (from around 1970). It is a wonderful recipe.

Lovely street shot

It seems the days of going out for some retail therapy have disappeared along with all the big stores. So sad! I always enjoyed a day out shopping with a friend making lots of stops for coffee and lunch. We all do the internet shopping now as the shops don’t hold the stock but it’s very sad. The high street definitely disappearing!

@pandorasecho I would definitely shop mostly online if all I had was a Walmart or equivalent Dixie! I like to shop local now, not much travel, smaller streets & individual shops plus you see people to chat to!
June 21st, 2019
@pamknowler I still do Pam but not that often & not so much in the bigger towns, local is best I think!
June 21st, 2019
@grannysue 8 always thought pralines were hard but these are more like a sort of fudge....the box is going down rapidly!!
June 21st, 2019
@jgpittenger I’m hoping it gets busier than this later in the day but a couple if hours later there wasn’t a massive difference. It’s so easy to shop online these days but definitely nicer to browse in person.
@loweygrace Preston did look lovely in the sun & the trees they planted a few years ago looking lovely...a big improvement!

Nice diary shot of the high street. You're right that internet is killing high streets everywhere, and I'm as guilty as anyone of using the internet to purchase items needed quickly as otherwise I have a one-hour drive to town, parking to pay for, and no certainty of getting what I want there, when I do get there! Whereas Amazon, well, it's so easy and quick. It's a poisoned chalice though - as are many things in today's world.

Such an inviting street to shop in. Really too bad that there are not more people in it.
Like you, I try to shop local if I can. Only go online if local does not have what I need.
June 21st, 2019
A sign of the times.. I very rarely go to town, no interesting shops apart from Debenhams... though how long that will be there, who knows
June 21st, 2019
@jamibann Middle of the night is my danger zone....on my iPad & see stuff! I bought a Kate Spade cross over bag the other night! Wasn’t a hasty decision as Alex bought the same in USA & it was the perfect bag I have been looking for, big enough for all my things especially the bulky glasses case....this one is perfect so I sent for it from USA, half price!
June 21st, 2019
Goodness that is quiet! It does look like that in a morning though if you go in just before the shops open.
June 21st, 2019
It does look very quiet. A very sad sign of the times.
