Fishing for tea

At Raglan Wharf we saw these guys throwing these fine circular nets into the sea.
As they threw them in the air got under the net as it hit the water. After a couple of minutes they pulled the fine rope & we were amazed how many small silvery fish were caught up in the net.
It was rather fascinating!

Three good things:
1. I have posted my Christmas cards.
2. Christmas jumpers, I like them but never want to pay the money for something you only wear at this time of the year....you would have to wear the same outfit every Christmas to get the value plus are they too hot?
3. A phone call from NZ.
Looks interesting.. wonder if they eat them or use them for bait..

This is the sort of thing you might see in Egypt - not in Raglan, NZ! Imagine the work cleaning and boning those tiny fish!

I watched this at Assateague in October. I got a soso picture of the net in the air. Posted it and people were fascinated. I thought they were fishing for bait fish.

Beautiful shot. Last September, when we were on the beach after a swim I saw a man using a net just like those. In less than a minute he caught hundreds of tiny fish and I was so angry at him. I told him it was illegal to fish like that and he had to pick up his kit and move off. In my view there is no hobby in catching fish in that way, killing the tiny fish without letting them to grow.

@sangwann I agree, I thought it was cheating! Hated seeing the poor little fish caught that way. You were brave & right to confront them.....I didn’t know it was illegal, I don’t know the rules in NZ but they are always a certain type of person who just wants a free supper.....we have discussed this before.
