The first time I had to use my mask today.
I had to go to the surgery for a blood test & required by law to wear a mask.
Not so easy as I can’t wear my hearing aids or glasses very well at the same time, the elastic gets tangled up & my glasses steam up.
I lip read a lot too so harder to tell what people are saying but I got by OK.
As you can see I was amazed to get a phone call offering me a hair appointment on the first day of opening!
I’m fairly quickly done so they must have thought one less off the endless lists!
Plus my niece happens to own the salon which might or might not help, they assured me I hadn’t pulled rank just a regular customer!
It’s a nuisance I have the a Pic-collage thing across the bottom but you have to pay to remove it & I’m not doing that!
Three good things:
1. The hair appointment of course!
2. Just gorgeous weather ....above 30C today.
3. I’m loving my new book The Diary of a Bookseller. I have discovered video clips on You Tube of the people in the book...real characters, it’s fascinating seeing them in person plus I have the sequel to look forward to. Sadly I shall finish it tonight....
One tip I have found useful - tuck a pipe cleaner just under the top of the mask, inside if you have a flap for a filter should you choose to use one. You can then bend it around the shape of your nose and it helps with the steaming up.
I am the same as you. I lip read a lot and masks are a nightmare. I feel sorry for my completely deaf friends. My hearing aids get tangled too and I have to be careful how and where I remove the mask so I don't lose one!
Love the excited chalk board date for your haircut! :) Looking forward to seeing the end results.
@casablanca Great tip Casa...the proper medical masks have the top part that bends but homemade ones are floppy so it’s a great idea. I need to find a pipe cleaner pronto! My hearing aids fly off when I take my mask off so have to abandon them & keep myself to myself when out & about in the future!
A great mask Pat - is it homemade ( from curtain off-cuts ) I made us a couple but in white (old pillowcase) wished now I had been inventive and made a coloured/patterned ones !!
@beryl A friend made it Beryl...she has been making scrubs with he4 granddaughter so has now turned her hand to masks...I feel ashamed I have done nothing when I look at their diligence!
A meme on Facebook today-
“Masks are like bras:
They are uncomfortable!
You only wear them in public!
When you don’t wear one, everyone notices!”
And Texas is not getting better, too many people didn’t follow the rules, so we are having huge increases in people with the virus. Most are quarantining at home, not having to be hospitalized. Our hospital admissions due to the virus have jumped though.
I’m so glad you can get your hair cut. It feels so good. My stylist washed and cut my hair, I had my mask on the whole time. I put my mask on, then put my glasses on top, the glasses nose piece holds the mask down and my glasses do not steam too much that way.
@louannwarren Excellent idea about the glasses Lou Ann....why did I not think of that! We will have more with the virus, people are acting very stupidly in this hot weather, crowding on to beaches...it’s crazy & selfish after all our work isolating!
@sdutoit Same here Sylvia....some folk have been wearing them in the supermarket but I only go when it’s quiet so lots of space. Think if the two meter changes we will have to wear them more which I don’t mind!
I haven’t been anywhere where I felt the need to wear a mask yet as I haven’t been indoors anywhere but I dread having to wear one.
Well done with that hair appointment 😁
It was my first time wearing a mask today as I went to the chiropodist! OMG I hadn’t realised about the steaming up and the heat generated with the mask on! Oh how I admire all those front line workers who are wearing the masks and visors every day!
I have my hair appointment on 14th July- still haven’t made up my mind about “embracing” the silver!
Good photo to record the times we are in! Re glasses steaming up when wearing a mask, years ago I worked as a nurse in operating theatre and had that problem; I was advised to wash my glasses with soapy water then dry them without rinsing and it seemed to work, so might be worth a try. Using a pipe cleaner to fit the mask better over the nose is a great idea.
@pamknowler I’m dithering about my style too....I like the longer on top but...hard decisions & im sure it won’t be a case of cutting our usual style as some like me think a change might be good. Colour us a massive decision & one I’m so happy not to have to make!
Oh, and now that we are about to get out and about a bit, things are getting even stranger! I haven't worn a mask yet, in fact I don't own one yet, but I think I should get one soon.
@momamo Thank you Monique I will look for that one. I’m not a great lover of collages as I would rather see one good photo but for stuff like this that tells a story they are ideal.
Lovely shot of you wearing the mask. Now I have used to wearing it when I go to shops or where I expect people close to me. I have been to the hairdresser to have a hair cut just this week. And that is the second time since I got married almost 50 years ago. The reason is that Christine cannot do it herself because of her plastered right hand.
A smaller size mask will help solve the foggy glasses. It shouldn’t be so close to your eyes. We’ve had to wear masks outside our house since March so I feel like a pro!
Good luck with your hair appointment.
Rosie and I started wearing masks when we were returning to the UK at the end of January, long before any were required.

I will look out for the book, sounds interesting.
