Eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.....
We have enjoyed the Remembrance Day services over the last few days despite the restrictions of Covid.
The quietness has been rather moving.
Our little village war memorial with its wreaths.
Three good things:
1. We have been to the tip this morning!
I hate the job!
We booked a slot & piled our stuff on the trailer. We had to tie it down as there was lots of plastic pots, chairs, old wheelbarrow etc etc. In addition we had some metal stuff, paint tins, an old electric fire & miscellaneous rubbish.
We got ticked off for not bringing just one type of rubbish & had to unload the plastic, drive out, join the queue & then drive each different type of rubbish in separate visits! Three times we did this...you couldn’t make it up....it was so quiet so luckily it didn’t take long to do all their manoeuvres!
I must add this was stuff left behind by previous owner.
2. We have a post box 100 yards from our house!
3. We have discovered the large tree in the centre of our garden is an Elm tree....
@happypat If it is full grown, it is indeed a rarity. Not many people know we still have a lot of English elms, but they rarely grow beyond hedge height before being attacked.
A lovely capture of your village war memorial. What a palaver over getting rid of your ( or rather their ) rubbish !! Surely you could have driven from one section to the next !! But never mind - it is all done now !.Fancy having a large Elm tree in your garden - I can envisage you having a seating area underneach its spreading branches Are Elms protected trees ? or am I thinking of some other tree !
Lovely photo, the silences are quite poignant really.
Sounds like a bit of a nuisance at the tip but good to have a trailer.
It will be interesting to watch the phases of the year via your elm tree. 😊
Its rather annoying that the previous owner left all this stuff but from what I remember he died so he wasn't thinking of selling. We have to pay to tip our stuff - except for cardboard and bottles. I read that the elm has staged a comeback after that dreadful Dutch Elm disease. You can prune them in September.
@maggiemae Yes the previous owner died so the place has been empty for three years. Jean loved her garden & there were so much garden stuff ready to throw out. I have never ever seen so many plant tags...there were hundreds...she must have kept every one of any plant she bought!
@beryl Well we thought they might be & the garden man said he would enquire but when the quote came back he didn’t mention it. It’s tall so needs pruning. Cathy suggested putting one of those tree benches all the way round too.
@obsidian There were five of them all in yellow jackets standing around, they aren’t allowed to help so as well as doing all that we had to stagger up the steps to throw stuff in...we have found a couple of things we forgot too! 😩
Your image is lovely. I’m sorry about all that rubbish nonsense! Good grief. Elm tree roots can be a problem, hopefully your’s is pretty far from your home.
A lovely bright shot with a warm and meaningful message. We also watched the service in Westminster Abbey this morning. What a shame you had to remove all that rubbish left by someone else. Our tip seems a bit better organised than yours!
@louannwarren Can they Lou Ann, it’s quite a way from the house thank goodness...it was rubbish none sense but the men calmed down towards the end after they had made their point several times!
An unusual Remembrance Day this year, but fortunately local communities have done their best not to let the day go un-marked, nationwide. A lovely shot of your local memorial. Sorry to hear about your tip experience ... what a pain that must have been!
Reading this, I’m so glad we can get rid of all our rubbish in 1 go ... we do have to wait in line, and sometimes quite long, maybe because we can unload it all in 1 time and visting different containers doing that 😉
VML the simplicity and dignity of this memorial, subtlety placed and accessible to all...all year round. Paimpont had its Remembrance Service for the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial this year, with attendance restricted to the Mayor and senior members of the Council. Whilst we all understand why, it saddens me. Where to do we go from here?
Sounds like a bit of a nuisance at the tip but good to have a trailer.

What a performance you had at the tip, but at least you managed to get rid of the rubbish eventually.
Your story sounds like a not-so-funny comedy routine but glad you got rid of the stuff!
