Daily jobs.

My sister in law was doing her twice daily routine of hens & ducks feeding when I walked past yesterday.
She loves her livestock & is very diligent in looking after them all. The quad bike is used to carry the feed & anything else that’s needed. There is a small pony there in a stable too.
Note the thing on the gate which when I first saw it I thought was a Duck’s head...it’s a disinfectant spray which hangs on the gate.

Three good things:
1. I got my walk in just before the rain.
2. I have used the slow cooker for the first time today but not impressed! A small lamb shank browned off first with onions into the cooker at 10am on high. At 4.30pm I looked at it for the first time...you could say it was just about cooked...I wanted it dropping off the bone! Anyway a good thing I have the electric, it’s in there now getting a good blast of heat! The jury is out on the slow cooker!
3. A good read of my book this afternoon!
Lucky hens and ducks having a commited carer..
Love my slowcooker.. its duel purpose as the inner pot can be used on the stove top..to brown off befor or give it extra heat at the end.

@julzmaioro Oh I don’t think mine can do that...it can go from crockpot to table but not from top to cooker. Mine has been in the oven twenty minutes now & it’s looking much more like it!

Lovely scene. Still peaceful even though your SIL is busy. I"ve got a duel purpose slow cooker which I use in the summer when the Aga is off. They take a bit of getting used to. I do tend to leave things for longer than they suggest.

A lovely rural shot. The 'duck's head' made me smile...

Did you check the settings on your slow cooker?
Mine has low, high and auto. I always do an hour on high before switching to auto. I always finish things like a lamb shank in the oven though.

Lovely shot

@obsidian I had it on high all the time...I think I will try something a bit less solid next time. We’ve eaten it but it wasn’t as I liked it dropping off the bone! Thanks so much for your advice.

@thistle01 I think a lamb shank might have been perhaps too ambitious Joyce...🤣🤣

@gijsje And me Bep!

@happypat Oh ... I always add some liquid too even if I am going to finish off in the oven.
I love doing beef brisket that way!

Lovely rural scene ha ha !I also thought it was a ducks head in the gate ! I once bought a slow cooker ,but after reading the instructions , decided it was not for me ( too slow) so took it back , but I do have a pressure cooker - I would have given a shank a quick blast in that and then finish off in the oven ! but my friend loves hers !!

We have a new oven and it's taking me a while to get used to it! Good you missed the rain.
December 4th, 2020
@obsidian I added some liquid too as it said to do so in the instructions....I think it’s a trial & error effort! I am tempted to pack it up in the box & send it back I must say!
December 4th, 2020
@beryl I think that might be what I do too....can they tell if I’ve used it I wonder? 😱. I think I will give it one more go....will ask Cathy how she manages hers I think. I know she didn’t like hers to start with.

@quietpurplehaze I’m using a fan only oven. We got it cheap second hand as the one in this house didn’t work. It’s so loud & to cook things slowly was awful listening to the noise the whole time. Of course I will be having a quieter oven when I get my new kitchen so do I actually need a slow cooker then?
Everything is so complicated these days especially if you’re not good at reading instructions! 🤣🤣🤣

@happypat I admit to giving the instructions to Ray and when I need to know something I ask him.....

Shame the oven is so annoyingly loud! I find the oven the best for meat falling off the bone but I do cook it in a stoneware pot. Very seldom use my slow cooker.
Looks like gumboot weather in that farmyard. So many chores to do!

It looks very muddy, hope you were wearing wellies. Love the 'duck'

i like the looking over the gate scene , it helps tell the story

How nice to stay so close to your s-i-l. Nice shot of her place!

@jamibann This is the farm where I walk past most days & I often take photos of sheep etc & it’s young Harry’s grandmother.

Slow cookers are many and various in their efficacy. I found that cutting the meat into reasonably sized pieces, allowing for shrinkage without compromising the desired result can be something of a black art! Am very fortunate as R loves food shopping, is a very creative cook...and l'm not welcome in 'his' kitchen...except to deal with the aftermath. Good deal!

Your family lives in the open countryside with fresh clean air and so close to nature. Here is all buildings and traffic.

A lovely rural scene

Wait -- are those CHICKENS that are so huge??
December 6th, 2020
I'm glad some folks love the daily chores. Unfortunately, I tire of them quickly.
December 7th, 2020
@jyokota The brown ones ....just ordinary hens as far as I know but you’re right they do look big!!
December 7th, 2020
@sangwann Well we are a farming family Dione so always lived in the countryside. In fact where we have moved to is the first time we’ve had proper neighbours right next door up to us. Still on edge of countryside though. It’s been lovely during all this lockdown to be out of the crowds.

@thewatersphotos Ha ha me too! Just glad not to be tied down to them after working 24/7 365 days a year milking cows!!

@happypat -- When I first moved to Iowa now 30+ years ago (I was only there five years) I would stop and photograph the pigs because I was fascinated by how big they were. These chickens are definitely worthy of being photographed for their impressive size.
