The mole hill

As we are on the subject of moles here are some recent ones. Freshly made during the night probably, this photo was taken up in the Trough of Bowland by the side of the road.
There are so many this year everywhere you look.
Another full lockdown on its way tonight we think...Boris is going to speak at 8pm.

Three good things:
1. A big surprise today as we received a present of a Royal birdhouse, the same as the one in my photo the other day. Our DIL & son in NZ ordered us one online...it’s fabulous & will look amazing in our garden when it’s finished. We never expected to get one so quickly! They both follow me on 365!
2. Watching a small squirrel taking nuts out if the ground feeder & burying them all over the garden. He’s digging holes pushing the nut in & beetling back for more. The strange thing is they are in random places, he’s never going to remember where they all are!
3. Christmas decorations back in the box!
This is lovely and like a photography exam with its diagonals and leading lines! Lovely news on the bird box and we have squirrels that bury walnuts everywhere in the autumn and at this time of year they’re digging up my bulbs trying to find them 🤨

My youngest used to play this game where whenever she saw a mole hill she would shout “ MOLE HILL” at the top of her voice. This shot would have been of major excitement to her! Can’t help but admire the little creatures although once rescued one from the cat and it bit me, problem was it’s teeth slant backwards and so I had to push my finger further down his throat to release. Anyway, that’s my experience with moles and their little hills! Your photo Is fab and took me on a walk down memory lane Which is probably the only place i will be able to walk after Boris has had his say tonight!

You could make a mountain out of those.

Yes stay at home time Lucy! I bet you’re doing that pretty much anyway now, I know we are! Needs must to get this horrendous virus under control again. Saying that I’m so glad I haven’t to do home schooling...,some parents hearts must be sinking tonight!
Love the story of your enthusiastic mole hill spotter!
@lucycameron

@terryliv Ha ha you could indeed!

@judithg I love watching the little squirrel Judith...I never knew birds & squirrels could be so fascinating to watch. We have a very large window here with low sill & chairs just to sit & look. Hope yours don’t disturb the bulbs. There don’t seem to be any bulbs coming up in this garden that I can see.

@lucycameron Your story reminded me of a friend's brother (we were just girls) who hated to see any food left on anyone's face. He would yell at the top of his voice 'Crumb"!! Now he was making a mountain out of a molehill!
How does any body manage to mow this grass with all these molehills!

Bep
Beautiful shot of the mole hills.
Love your #1.
January 4th, 2021
@maggiemae Well it scatters all over so you can understand why farmers & gardeners don’t want moles anywhere near their grass!
January 4th, 2021
@gijsje Yes a big surprise, we are very lucky!
January 4th, 2021
Yikes
January 4th, 2021
Wow... they move a LOT of dirt!!
January 4th, 2021

Such a familiar sight for country folks , my dad would be quite happy to take me into the fields to spot molehills amongst other country finds -- but lo and behold if a mole came into his garden !! Such beautiful velvety little creature ! I am sure you can not wait to hang up your Royal birdhouse !
January 4th, 2021
@kwind it’s great soil for repotting plants Kim....
January 4th, 2021
@beryl Yes I agree, beautiful velvet bodies.... if only they used the same hole each time they come up to the surface!! Happy memories of your dad! Molehills can make a mess of a lawn!
January 4th, 2021
@samae So am I beat it won’t be until the garden clearers have been & the elm tree is pruned.
January 4th, 2021
Wow they are huge and so many. I just love Terry's comment. @terryliv

It's amazing how quickly they work and how much soil such a small creature can shift. Nice wall!

There seem to be more moles hills around every year. When walking the dogs they have to visit every mole hill they see and pee on it! I just hope the mole has gone! Finlay did catch a mole last year in Devon in the first lockdown. I think he was more surprised than I was to see the mole walking across the lawn in the middle of the morning!

i knew this was you pat, i recognised those green lancashire stone walls .
nice light and scene
January 4th, 2021
Those are huge! Ours run longer but not so high! Wow!
January 5th, 2021
Oh dear moles are such a problem. This is a great image of their hills. That is so thoughtful of your family to quickly send you a Royal birdhouse!
January 5th, 2021
Busily at work for sure
January 5th, 2021
Moles were once the bane of my life but luckily not anymore. One pest I don't think was imported to NZ.
What a lovely surprise to receive your royal mail bird box. I'm looking forward to seeing your garden progress over the coming months (years?).
January 5th, 2021
Love all your 'good things' - a super day for you! Your Royal box will have a place of pride somewhere in that new garden! Moles are a real problem in parts of Braemar too. I remember once dad having a line of them across his lawn. They seem to have disappeared now though.

Great composition. And would be a good entry for the From the Road challenge.
January 5th, 2021
This could be my m-i-l's garden!!
January 5th, 2021
@jamibann Comedown to Lancashire! 🤣
January 5th, 2021
@casablanca NO! That’s not good!
January 5th, 2021
@kwiksilver Yes it would Gillian if I did the challenges.....🤣
January 5th, 2021
Great shot. And lovely narrative.
January 5th, 2021
It looks like the moles are taking over! But this is such a wonderful shot of quintessential English countryside. I absolutely love the green, the hills, and the perfectly awesome stone wall.
I hope vaccine distribution makes lockdowns a thing of the past in very short order. Stay healthy, Pat!
January 5th, 2021
At first I had thought there had been a horse parade and wondered why you would have taken a picture of that!
January 5th, 2021
Looks like the moles have had a busy night with all those holes. Lovely lighting in this one.
January 5th, 2021
@happypat oh they do - I have chicken wire over a lot of them - they also eat the tips off!
January 5th, 2021
Looks like they've been very busy
January 5th, 2021
Lee
Looks like a spring day, all the snow gone.
January 5th, 2021
How cool that you received such a great gift. Those moles must be such a pest!
January 5th, 2021
