Queen Victoria Memorial, Lancaster

This rather magnificent memorial is a Grade 2 listed building erected in 1906 & stands in the centre of Dalton Square in Lancaster city centre.
Built of Portland stone with bronze sculptures, the pedestal sits on a rounded plinth with four bronze lions. On the four cardinal faces are near life sized likenesses of 53 prominent figures of the Victorian era.
Of them only two are female, Florence Nightingale & George Elliot.

Three good things:
1. A visit from our architect.
2. The garden clearance firm is coming first thing Monday morning!
3. We have a few tiny snowdrops.....you never know in an unknown garden what will come up....the previous owner loved this garden but was obviously not a fan of garden bulbs.

I was really bad commenting last night sorry...things cropped up!
What a stunning Memorial , but it purt a smile on my face as the 1st thought that came to my mind was -- she has a long way to fall down from there !! -- how disrespectful of me !
Busy times for you Pat - no worries re your lack of commenting !

That is marvelous! Sadly, they don’t seem to make things like this anymore.

It is rather spectacular! Nigel lived in Dalton Hall when we were students in Manchester (in fact when I met him!) so I have a soft spot for John Dalton - quite apart from the fact he was a genius.

what a lot of work to build this! And it will last forever! I wonder if people in 2050 will know who Florence and George are!

Isn't it a wonderful memorial. David's Mum and Dad lived not too far from here when they moved from North Wales. David had left home by then though because he was in the RAF by that time

I love these memorials, so dramatic and feel like they are full of little details of history when you look closer. Interested that this is in Lancaster. It's my friend's son's birthday today and he is at Lancaster University! I sent a card through. Nice to see something of where he lives!

I can remember Lancaster university when it was just a young fairly unimportant uni but now it’s absolutely up there with the top ones....Lancaster is a nice small city for young people from all over the world to study there...you see lots of students from the Far East.
