Harry & I have been & done a bit of gardening today. We took a packed lunch & made a start! It is a start too as it will take a good couple of years to get it anyway we like it!
The beds are full of dead growth & there are still a few brambles trying to sprout....more spray next autumn!
I’m not a natural gardener & we certainly don’t want the work so mostly grass & shrubs & more trees.
Three good things:
1. Five shrubs planted including two foxgloves down in the wood area.
2. The piling in the new foundations is complete & just waiting for the building regs man to ok it on Monday then it’s all go!
3. Our grandson in NZ is a firefighter & has been tasked with the raising & lowering of the Union Jack for the Duke of Edinburgh.
The instructions are as follows.....
The flag has to be taken down before dark each night & back up each morning at sunrise. It cannot touch the ground, must be done in uniform. It has to be raised to the top of the pole before lowering it to half mast & to do this until further notice!
Great to be able to make a difference to the garden already.
And excellent that your grandson has such a significant role with the flag. Proud event to remember forever.
How special for your grandson to be able to do the flag ceremony each day, especially with his extra strong connections to England.
Nice you could take a picnic to your place so you could get onto the garden work.
It is lovely to see your house and garden taking shape.
I know all about the flag ceremony. On RAF camps the flag is raised and lowered each day and as you say if anyone significant dies the flag has to be raised and then lowered to half mast. Whoever is on Orderly Officer and Orderly Sergeant that day has the task of lowering the flag at sunset and raising it at sunrise. The Orderly Officer does the salute and the Orderly Sergeant raises and lowers the flag.
Thank you all, yes we are very proud thinking if him doing that specially as it’s a volunteer fire station so he has to do it in conjunction with his other fire fighters job which is a good drive away into Hamilton.
It’s the little things you do don’t think about that constitute the formalities of what is traditional & right in the armed forces & similar institutions.
The lawn looks good and its is also good to take a few years to decide what to plant. Foxgloves are good because they multiply. Lupins are super too if you can get them. Where is your grandson raising and lowering the flag?
@maggiemae In Morrinsville maggie the fire station he volunteers at but he’s also a firefighter at Hamilton airport so will have to fit it in round his shifts.
Beautiful capture and your property looks very big - at least compared to those you see here. It will look very nice when ready. Work seems to be going on well on the house, too.
@sangwann Thank you Dione, garden is big but house not so big! We had to have space round us....we are used to lots of acres so we were determined to buy somewhere we were comfortable with. We have lovely neighbours which we like but space to breathe outside.
Gardening is a never ending work in progress, but you have such a beautiful foundation to work with and are off to a good start! It will grow more beautiful by the season with you and Harry working your plan with trees and shrubs.
What a distinction for your son to be a crucial part of traditional honor and ritual.
