Opinions please. by happypat

Opinions please.

This little dresser & matching bookcase was bought at great expense from a really good furniture shop.
I am undecided if this dark stuff actually goes in our modern light room. Trying it today & have put the bookcase in the hall but still undecided,
The dresser used to have china etc on it but I have put these small books there instead hoping it looks more modern.
Won’t be offended but would like your opinions please.

Three good things:
1. A real good sort out if all the books I kept…two boxes going to the charity shop, the rest I’ve kept.
2. I have a sore hip that has gradually crept up on me…I have an appointment for Monday. Hoping to get in the hip queue & by the time it’s getting really bad I might be near the front!!
3. Our son & DIL have arrived in South Island NZ traveling on the ferry with trailer & two dogs. Ferry was delayed so a long day.
Such a beautiful piece of furniture Pat , I love it , but whether it suits your home , is so difficult to tell when you just see a small portion of the room/ area - Pat if you love this , then I should make sure I would have it in your home . After all other people's opinions should not matter !

Firstly I absolutely love your kitchen. And as Beryl said it is difficult to make a comment based on seeing it from the angle of the kitchen. However when I looked at your previous photo, and see the antique table, I believe you would be able to incorporate it into your area. As my husband often says, put it there, leave it for a few days and it will either grow on you or it won't.
What a beautiful view you have with those gorgeous windows looking out into your garden. You have done a superb job in renovating your home.

What a beautiful piece. Perhaps, and it could be considered sacrilege, you could try the Frenchic Paint and coordinate it with your kitchen.

Well this is tricky…. I think if you keep it you need to embrace it - nice things on it and some bunting pinned up and maybe a nice cosy chair nearby! You could also go with @motherjane ‘s suggestion or have it dipped? But both might ruin it! Otherwise I’d replace it with a well built bookcase! We’ve had a huge cupboard for glasses (custom made for our previous house) and a wooden cupboard for years and they are really useful but I’m working on replacing them- would love a Neptune dresser but might be too ££££

@judithg Ooh Neptune…now you’re thinking money! I did ask the guy so is making our fitted wardrobes if he could make a bookcase but he said you could buy ready built for cheaper than he could buy the wood for. I was going to put a bookcase here but thought I would try this oak furniture first. Your suggestions bunting etc is exactly what I had before so really trying to be modern!

@motherjane I doubt it would dip very well Jane, darent try really. It’s Titchmarsh & Goodwin & we really payed a lot of money for this dresser & bookcase. I’m loath to get rid of it & you can’t give away dark furniture!

Thank you Dora for your thoughts, just what we decided, leave it there & see how it goes. Mid September we have two grey sofas coming so might blend it all together more. @dora

@beryl No they shouldn’t but it’s good to see what others think Beryl…I’m dithering, think I will leave it there for a while & see what it looks like when the covid sofas arrive!! It does feel more like out house with it there I must say…there is still a bit of old house left in me!!

Sometimes something like this can be that little surprise when all the rest is light.

@joansmor Ha ha wise words Joan! Thank you.
September 3rd, 2021
I think it stands out here - on its own, a beautiful piece of furniture!

Wot @joansmor said…much better than I could. Love it.

Interesting to read the comments above. I would keep it but as commented above difficult to see when you can't see the whole room.

The house is just a shell and you fill the shell with your possessions and memories. Like us you have been married a long time so the memories will be a mixture of old and new. Keep them all it is what makes your shell of a house a home.

Our house has lots of different themes in different rooms in the house, all memories of the 50 odd years we have been together.

I rather like it mum. I like different woods together. Your home is always lovely so whatever you decide will be the right decision x x

It's a beautiful piece of furniture - the wood is lovely. Maybe you could hang a group of pictures or family photos on the same wall? Sounds like a good plan to live with it for a while, wait until the new sofas arrive and then decide.

We bought a pine Welsh dresser with our wedding money and it fitted really well in the old Welsh cottage we lived in at the time. In subsequent houses it's looked odd but I didn't want to get rid of it as it was the wedding gift from family and friends. I wasn't brave enough to paint it for a long time until, finally, we took the plunge and painted it white a couple of years ago. It now looks much better as it blends in against the white walls in our living area. Of course, our dresser isn't expensive or antique so it didn't really matter if it all went wrong - we could have just used it in the garage for storage instead, lol!

Our entire home is very eclectic when it comes to furnishings but it somehow or other works and friends often comment on how warm and welcoming it is. I'm sure this beautiful piece of furniture combines with your personality and the decor of your choice and will complement the rest of your home. Go for it!

Surround yourself with things you love and you can’t go wrong!

I like it a lot

Pat, it is beautiful, it looks lovely on that wall, it really is a statement piece. I’m sure the longer you leave it there, the more you will love it!

I love this piece of furniture, and I think anything goes, colour-wise, these days. From this image it looks to stand out a little too much against your more modern background, but when it's completely full of your cherished bits and pieces, it will blend in better. Also, as someone else mentioned, your kitchen table is quite dark, and a similar style. You could use the new chalk paint to give it a facelift and change the colour - it's very easy to use ... or you could just leave it and see how you feel about it when everything is in it's place! I suspect it will fit in just nicely.

@onewing I completely agree with Babs! She says it just right, the things that are important to you are what makes it home.
September 4th, 2021
I love your modern sleek kitchen but I think there is always a place for your cherished furniture. I am sure when you have your sofas in place it will all begin to look cosy and warm. It’s good to have different styles as you go around your house. It will take time for you to get everything in its right place. Don’t rush and it will all start to feel like home. Definitely do not paint the dresser!
September 4th, 2021
I think the warmth and grain of the wood is a lovely contrast to the kitchen. It brings personality ...
September 4th, 2021
I like it. It's a good mix with modern furniture.
September 4th, 2021
What a beautiful piece of furniture. You could put up family pictures round it and make it a real statement. Please don't paint it!
September 4th, 2021
I'll not venture to give an opinion! I love your new place!!
September 4th, 2021
Very difficult to decide. lovely piece of furniture but everything around is so white and modern. Perhaps put more white items on it.
September 4th, 2021
It looks lovely, nicely contrasting with the lighter colours
September 4th, 2021
I'm not sure, it's not actually IN the kitchen so maybe you can get away with it. Like so many have said, live it for a bit or maybe try some different bits and peices to adorn it. It's a lovely piece. When we had our modern kitchen installed Peter wanted to put the old grandmother clock in there. I was totally against it so it went in the conservatory instead. We found a little niche for it which is just right and the chimes don't wake us up at night!
September 4th, 2021
@ladymagpie Well the rest of the room will have two grey sofas & ding table & chairs which are pine to match a big sideboard we have in there too.I’m hoping it all blends together nicely in the end.
September 4th, 2021
@busylady it’s so difficult isn’t it…our old furniture does not look right in this living space but I don’t want the room to lose that homely feel & be too bare & minimalistic so I think when the grey sofas come & a rug I’m holding it will all blend in.we shall wait & see!

@dkbarnett @carolmw @thewatersphotos @mave @sangwann @newbank @louannwarren @jgpittenger @bkp @essiesue

So many lovely comments & thoughts, thank you all so much for your input. Each one of you have said what you think & very sensible suggestions, I’m grateful for every one.
September 4th, 2021
@pamknowler No I wouldn’t dare paint it Pam, it’s proper oak & this & the bookcase in the hall are still available to buy at the massive price of £4000!! The best furniture we have in the house!!
September 4th, 2021
@jamibann I’m sure when the sofas arrive it will all come together hopefully Issi…wise words.
September 4th, 2021
@nickspicsnz Yes I think it’s the memories & history that make a piece of furniture, where it came from & perhaps who gave it to you….Harry & I saved hard for these two pieces so they are definitely staying Nick. Your dresser is a treasure to you both.
September 4th, 2021
@floralchicknz Thanks Lesley….good yo have a bit of family input from someone who has seen the real thing.
September 4th, 2021
@onewing Perfect answer Babs…you win the prize!! You’re right if course. Our daughter said don’t get rid of anything mum until you’ve decided what fits & what you want to keep. The longer I look at the dresser in it’s place the more I like it. The angle of this photo only shows the modern kitchen bit so I can see more an overall picture.
Yes you & me after practically 59 years of marriage are bound to have quite a collection of odds & sods!
September 4th, 2021
Its a lovely piece if furniture Pat.. I am sure it fits fine .. a potted plant or flowers may lighten the look..
September 5th, 2021
It is beautiful. Although it is a little dark if you have other pieces of similar furniture l am sure it will blend in
September 5th, 2021
It's interesting reading the comments - I guess you just keep it for a while then decide later - no rush to make a decision.
September 5th, 2021
Only you can tell if it suites today. I will say that seeing the other cabinets at the same time does make it look "dated." That said, putting books on it is fun and gives it a new purpose. I was going to get rid of our dining room set when we moved, but the house had a "dining room." Anyway, I put my angel collection in the hutch and not the dishes and added a lot of plants. I still wouldn't mind getting rid of all of it as it is such a pain to dust.
September 5th, 2021
I am amazed at the response your request has drawn! I'll just say that my eye is immediately drawn through to the kitchen when I look at your photo.....

@julzmaioro @bkbinthecity @dide @cdonohoue @quietpurplehaze

Hoping today’s photo gives a better idea. Thank you for your input!

The youngsters use a whole mix of furniture and try to re-use rather than go all new so ‘modern’ can definitely have older pieces included. It all seems to be about the house plants with them!
