A small shrubby plant.. Its distinctive balloon-like fruit are covered with soft spines. These fruit contain many black seeds topped with silky tufts of white hairs like cotton. When the fruit splits to disperse the wind borne seeds, they look very much like an open cotton boll. But have no relationship to cotton.
