Coke Ovens by harbie

Coke Ovens

We are traveling again (we've been gone a lot this summer, but it's been fun). We are back around Carbondale, Colorado for a wedding, Redstone to be exact(pop 92). These are coke ovens which were used 1899 to 1910. They burned coal into coke which was more usable in trains and steel plants. During the 1960s-70s they were used as homes by some of the hippies. Now they are on the historic registry.

This is so interesting! I wonder if they were dirty (as in coal dust dirty) to live in. I like the clouds on the mountain behind them too!
