In our region of germany it is a tradition for young men to place a tree decorated with crate paper in front of the house of a girl they like late at night on April 30th. Thus the name 'May Pole' as they magically appear May 1st. If the girl likes the guy he usually gets an invitation to dinner or a case of beer.
