A German smoking man (Räucherman) is a cool little wooden figure which is hollow inside and comes apart in two peices. One can then burn a small incense cone inside the man (on a metal piece!) and the smoke comes out the pipe-filled mouth of the smoking man, who therefore looks like he is smoking.
My uploading has really fallen by the wayside this week. I have still been shooting but I was rushing to finish up some christmas photo gifts for the family early this week and I spent 100% of my free time on those projects so they could arrive by christmas. I think I just made the deadline. Sorry about not commenting on anyones shots lately, I anticipate it will be until January until things calm down for me, as I'm sure is the case for almost everyone.
Cool! Aren't they great? My parents are German and the area where they come from, it is an old tradition to hand whittle these lovely little figurines, angels and these smoking men, as well as nutcrackers...my parents have a large collection of beautiful figurines that come out once per year at Christmas. I love the tradition.
Love your picture and I've never heard of these! I like burning incense and would love to find one of these little guys. I'll have to search ebay for them! :) Tis the season for too much to do & too little time to get it all done! :)
@bluemoon you can find them all over the internet! perhaps also try searching smoking man or the german word räucherman or plural german Räuchermänner.
Its a shame that now a lot of them aren't original German made ones, heaps of them are now made in China. I like the original ones as they have tradition.
