Surpisingly I have lived in Aachen for over 2.5 years and I have wanted to take this shot since I moved here but tonight was the night. It is one of those things I always thought I would do another time.
This large space between the cathedral and the town hall is known at the katschof, and was the layout of Charlemanges original cathedral/palace complex. I tried to frame it so the trees on both sides of the cathedral form a bit of a bowl shape, and I wanted to catch the other church tower in the background as well. It was pretty damp out so I got some nice reflections off the cobbles as well. I wished the sky had some clouds instead of that monochromatic overcast grey, but that just means I have to try again another day.
Incredible image....I absolutely love the lighting, the reflections and I actually like the overcast sky. I think it's just perfect the way it is but I might change my mind when you post it next time with clouds! :)
@capemayblackdog of course I used my tripod so the ISO was low, you see the ten second exposure. I read that with my camera I can take exposures up to 30 seconds without introduction of significant grainyness.
