My entry for Week 6 of the Dogwood Challenge:
Vision: Alternating Rhythm
Alternate patterns of light to bring depth and rhythm to the photograph.
I made the trip back from town by bike for the third time this week having deposited my ninth bag of books to the Oxfam shop. You would think that my shelves might be empty by now, but I can hardly see the difference. Still it feels good to finally be relieving the house of some of its clutter - the purpose of my week off work.
I had to get off my bike, for these patterns of shade and light. For the first time this week, I was out whilst the sky was cloud free and shadows strong. I loved the ladder effect of the shadows cast by the balustrade along from the town bridge. My natural inclination is to wait for the passers by to clear and focus on the geometric patterns alone, but this time, I held the camera in place just long enough for an unsuspecting passer by to enter the frame. I think it tells more of a story - I'm getting all excited about patterns and lines and shapes and everyone else passes by without a second look (except perhaps to wonder what I am up to).
how fortunate that the flashofred challenge has me looking at lines as a compositional element within black and white. The two combine well.
Brilliant idea to include the pedestrian. It is the perfect element to tell story by. And I think this is the best shot I've seen all week of the alternating rhythm assignment.
Fabulous patterns, well spotted. I love it. We had a book cull last year and like you say there doesn't look much change, but at least we have got rid of some of our hundreds of books.
@stimuloog Thank you Marloes - yes I am having fun with this. @haskar thank you so much, the alternative pov just seemed right. @redandwhite thank you Catherine - I was fortunate the sun was out to create the shadows - the only time during the week. @carolmw thank you Carol. The angle just seemed to work. @evalieutionspics that is very kind of you to say so Evalie - much appreciated. @stiggle thank yo so much @gardenfolk thank you very much for your visit and lovely comment. @onewing thanks Babs. I'm looking at our shelves now - they are still full. @gaylewood thank you Gayle , much appreciated @moonmtn thank you - yes this is my favourite this week. @olivetreeann I am most honoured to receive your affirmation on this shot. Great picture, and I fully agree with your emotions trying to declutter books. It's just so hard because we are parting with a part of our lives and our dreams.
