Rainbow 25

This week's rainbow colours are all abstract (ish) and feature glass and water.

To start with, I found a large glass container and was hoping to produce some amazing patterns with oil drops as inspired by Mel here:

Well the olive oil I used looked dirty yellow on the surface of the water and my photographic attempts were soon abandoned as I realised I was getting nowhere, despite changing oil type, container and water. In the interests of the environment, I had to switch to other means of photographing the water and glass combination alongside the coloured sheets of paper.

Red, started off as some petal leaves floating on water but I disliked the result so much when I came to post it yesterday, that I decided to have another shot at it today.

I can see, that water shots with coloured ink are no easier to master. But here you have it. I'm done with playing.
Ink is tricky but you've captured it well, I could never really get it to work out... If it helps, I used a macro lens for my oil shot, and my light & colour source for the blue one was a tablet screen with a plain blue desktop background. Having the light source directly under the water works best. Adding some dish soap to the water (without swishing!) helps to give the droplets a better shape, not so flat.

This is quite a composition and so intriguing to see how you created it - or how I imagine you created it.

Nice play... I did some oil shots too, but I didn't like any of them. I love abstracts they allow you to imagine and that left hand side of the glass container does that for me. It's frustrating to play at times, but when you get a result it's all worth it. Trouble is most of us have no real set up, we are using what we find around the house. I used to use my iPad for a light source until it no longer opened up. I think you need two light sources to achieve some things, coming from both sides. I use my iPhone but it's not ideal.

This is interesting. I tried an oil shot for today too, not sure what it looks like yet, because I haven't downloaded it (I have a back up shot from last week). I also tried a blue ink in water shot when I was playing.

You have captured more than I ever did. I am HORRIBLE at getting oil and water shots. I've actually sworn them off they are so frustrating to me! And I didn't fare any better with food coloring in water shots either but at least I got a little something with those. This is interesting though and I think if you just had the jar on a countertop with a plain background we'd see the whole thing. But good for you- it's better than I ever did!

You have done so well with this shot, I love it.

i like that you have a theme for each week. i seem to dot about all over the place as the mood takes me. your grid is looking amazing! i've never tried oil & water but it's on the list. really like how this turned out - appealingly abstract, and the ink trails have a lovely energy as though they're shifting before my eyes
